a)accidental lucidy? b) afraid of reality checks

[bare with me, i cant sleep so i type alot]

a) ok, so this was last night, before i started studying about lucid dreaming, actually, this is probably one of the main reasons why I joined your community.

ok, i have this american friend whose been telling me about lucid dreams, i was amazed that they could actually excist, but thought it couldn’t never happen to me, well, something actually, pretty funny yet mean happened to me last night.

So, there i was, having some kind of nightmarish/scifi dream which i cant remember anymore, anyhow, at that time, i REALIZED i was sleeping, without even trying to, i cant remember anymore why i realized it, but i went “I GOTTA WAKE UP AND WRITE THIS DREAM UP, its so genious ill make millions if i write it into a movie script!” so, yeah now i “wake up” which was VERY realistic, and i stayed up for , what seemed like a long time 20mins+ ?, and went back to sleep. I was very sure i was up all this time, and i wrote most of the plot down.

Turns out i was sleeping the whole time. umm , when i told my friend about this he said that i experienced one of the obstacles when reaching lucid dreaming, that i would have probably advanced if ive done a reality check. but yeah , up until today i wasnt really prepared for lucid dreaming.

Was my friend right, was i getting close to lucid dreaming?
Basically, i could have been lucid dreaming without knowing it?
since i WANTED to write the stuff down in the dream, and so i did? then i WANTED to go back to sleep, and yet it worked again.

b) and one more question, im kinda afraid of the reality check, i think it was this site that suggested bringing a note with you, and having something written on it, then you have to look away, and try to read it again,
IM VERY AFRAID OF THIS PART, since, i know i would be freaked out if the note said something like “YOU ARE GOING TO DIE” written with blood, or worse :sad:
Anything horrible happened to you / you ever freaked out while having the reality check done?
(yes, i wach too much horror movies)

i understand if you didnt have the time to read my post, since yes, im a total beginner and you’ve all probably read posts like this millions of times. please dont flame me though :smile:

/ still angry about forgetting the genious plot of my dream, there goes my millions
:cry:

{edit}
its late, good night, err… lucid dreams! ill read your replies(?) tomorrow morning, hope to learn something, thanks!

That sounds kind of annoying, writing down everything and not actually doing so. I’ve had a false awakening one time too.

I thought I woke up from some dream I was having, looked at my clock. it said something like 7:20 am. Nothing unusual, so I go back to sleep. Then I wake up later and my clock now says 6:00 am. It confused for about 10 minutes untill I finally realized what was going on.

As for the reality checking, there’s many more RCs that probably won’t scare you. My favorite is squeezing my nose so no air could pass through, then try to breathe through it. Most of the time in dreams you would still be able to breathe. Another one is to look at your hands and count the fingers. If you have 6 fingers and your hand is all fuzzy, chances are you’re dreaming.

Hope that helps! Any other questions?

It has happened to me too. I can only hope that the false awakening was more interesting than the dream I forgot. Come to think of it, I used to have more FA’s when I bothered to write down dreams in the nighttime. I must start doing it again.

a) You were not only close to lucid dreaming, you were doing it. Not the FA, you can’t be lucid dreaming without knowing it, to be lucid is to be aware you are dreaming.

b) You don’t have to do the RC with the text. But I suggest you try it anyway, don’t let fear get in your way! If you face up to it you will probably find that it’s not so bad, it’s only a little bit of text. Besides if you do get scared when you see it your mind will awaken further and you may actually be jolted into a higher lucidity. Maybe you run the risk of waking up, but that’s the worst that can happen.

thanks for your replies :smile:

im kinda annoyed because, haha, if i were lucid dreaming, like, i genuinely believed i was woken up, all i did was the usual stuff, walked to my desk, wrote the stuff up and went back to bed, though I could have flown away from the window :sad:

oh and about false awakenins, yeah, i’ve had a similiar one with the clocks, though mine was meaner, i’ve always thought i was shutting my alarm clock while in sleep ( i never wake up till like the tenth snooze alarm ) so one of the school days, i had a FA where the alarm rang again , so i turned over to see the alarm clock , “oh, its only 4 am” (i never have my alarn that early) and shut the alarm clock, or pressed the snooze button, cant remember anymore.
Next thing i know, I wake up for real this time, turns out its 8.10 and im late from school, ha.

p.s. just woke up but cant remember the dream, i kinda have some figures of it in my head, but im not sure. well i only had six hours of sleep, if thats something that counts.

oh and yeah, i have psyked myself for reality checks, i will probably try the “look at your hands and you know youre dreaming” , thanks for your help!

Snooze :content: , don’t worry about it. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll realize how fun it is to do RCs. Also, if you do see such a rc, then it will help you get lucid anyway :tongue:.

Most of the time, I do the Clock or watch RC. I also look at any words or passges, look again and find the words have changed. And most of the time, words change they are ‘unreadable’ . For example I once looked at a poster, which said ‘hgdas’ and then when i looked back, it said ‘hjad’…

So don’t worry about it at all, I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it soon.

@Snooze:
Hah, that happened to me, too, in one of my earlier lucid dreams. I had a FA and got up to record my dreams. However, I noticed something odd about the handwriting and got lucid again. :cool:

Anyways, you got lucid, so congrats on that. :smile: And it seems that often, just hearing about the possibility is enough to be able to get lucid (it was like this for me, I guess).

About being afraid, well, there is no reason to be, really. If you are lucid, you are in control. Everything you can experience is a part of yourself. No one can hurt you. There may be scary situations, but there is always the possibility of turning them around in your favor.
On the other hand, everything you (really) expect to happen probably will happen. So be prepared. :wink:

The hand reality check is a good one. It almost never fails for me, especially if done twice in a row. But then again, I usually don’t bother doing RCs if I am already lucid, and it is not so simple to just look at your hands by accident. :eh:
