K that was a little hipocritical…
Umm yeah that kinda turned this whole thing toward us…
Which is more ‘offensive’, an obviously tongue-in-cheek piece of satire about national stereotypes, or constant replies elsewhere telling us all in all seriousness that we risk going to ‘hell’ and suffering horribly for all eternity, simply for choosing not to believe in some self-serving, viscious ‘God’?
I can understand how the ‘John Cleese’ (or not) sketch would be irritating to many people - it might have been more funny if it had been half as long, and less blah blah blah … even I know that the “World Series” was named after a magazine (The World), and I’m not from the US and don’t like baseball … however, I personally find “you must believe in our wonderful, unconditionally loving (hah hah ) God or you’ll suffer for all eternity” type Christian rhetoric infinitely more nauseating & offensive, but we have to put up with that, don’t we now.
How can someone make a personal attack on a nation of millions of people?
Surely you understand what I was saying well enough not to need clarification on a simple mistake. Fine, I’ll rephrase, just for you: I don’t condone verbal attacks and snipes on other nations or people.
Bah, I say, to ever responding to this thread! I’m reminded of why I strayed from ever posting anything that had the capability of stimulating controversy. It’s just utterly pointless. . .
Forget everything I’ve written in here. Be offended if you want. Laugh if you want. What the hell do I care anymore?
hahaha… i admit that was funny, i’m an american, and if anything it’s funnier that way. i think the joke is basically on both parts (uk, and us)
I was just making a silly joke, no need to get upset.
Loads of reactions(pretty surprised), in my opinion, it was funny at some points but others, Hmmm blah! But after reading the whole thread, i can’t help myself but smile Great post Mystic
why the hell would he bash on Bush and then make a joke about Bush’s little puppet (Blair) ruling over us.
This is the best thing ever. I’m English, so I guess the jokes didn’t go over me, in favour of ‘slapstick’ "lol Joey fell over comedy. You see the thing about our humour is that you have to think about it, it’s not just “Ge dang got a hammer in his hand y’all!”, it takes more than half a brain to work out. I don’t really see why your offended, you guys poke fun at us all the time. You see, the US is very isolationist, it doesn’t seem to realise that there is the rest of the worlk out there exept “Those dang terrorists that we’re fighting, but not the IRA, we give them money y’all!.. Whats a hypocrite?” This yank atitude was the whole basis of the joke, go and re-read it before getting offended.
hello again, some of you would tell me to lighten up, some of you would tell me i need to learn to count, and some of you back me up in one way or another.
Like Dreamaddict said I AM sick and tired of the US Bashing, joke or not. America is ridiculed every day on another board im a regular on. Seeing it here was strange.
I do have a good sense of humor and I can take a joke, which isn’t very apparent in my first response. I’m not like that in every US topic, you might see that that is different than my other posts where I usually have a chip on my shoulder. So I guess you could say it was a bad day.
EDIT: Alex D, that stereotype is exactly what I’m talking about, We are not all stupid egocentric megalomaniacal people like you are hinting at. I don’t know a single person who thinks like that and we havent been isolationist for a century.
Thanks for not flaming me, and I hope there isn’t any hard feelings between any of us.
Sigh.
This wasn’t “US-bashing”.
Not that the US doesn’t – through attitudes, policies and actions – constantly invite plenty of deservedly sharp criticism.
But Cleese here was staying away from substantive issues, in favo(u)r of clearly and deliberately non-consequential issues (except maybe for the refrain about most americans being astoundingly ignorant of the wider world).
Some perspective is called for here. If americans can’t stand a little friendly ribbing – from the very countries that are most like it, and that are its best allies in geo-political, military and economic arenas of the world – then that most likely just goes to show that perhaps such criticisms are badly needed, and need to be heeded a little more than they are, rather than carelessly disregarded merely because they conflict with blithe american self-regard.
If memory serves, I think I may have read this from a magazine on my Kitchen table about 5 years ago. Its the part about the whole football/rugby nancy boy kevlar thing that I remember reading.
Anyways, I could be mistaken, but if I’m right, that would mean this was written when Bush was elected for his FIRST term. Aren’t some of us making a big deal about a joke based on something that happened five years ago?
Think about it, Cleese said, “Your failure to elect a competent leader…”
OBVIOUSLY he’s making a joke about how Florida was undetermined and Bush went to office despite the popular vote not being in his favour. He is not bashing America.
Well, that’s if my memory is correct.
I’m pretty sure I did see this in that magaizine oh so long ago, pretty darn sure.
how can anyone be offended by an article pointing out some obvious absurdities regarding almost entirely inconsequential and irrelevant cultural differences?
would you have been proud had the author praised the things he attacked?
gyaah, i give up, i don’t care anymore, I still think that the “majority of america is oblivious to the outside world” thing is totally false.
Your Lord Rothschild would get a good laugh out of this.
It’s not that americans are oblivious to the world, hell, they are oblivious to their very own nation. And for that matter, it’s not just america, pretty much the whole damn world, especially people under the Collective Empire of Lord Rothschild(aka 99.9% of world), are oblivious to how the world works.
So really you Americans and Europeans need to get along and give each other a hug, you’re both serfs of the same Lord after all.
You think Iraq is being liberated? You think the terrorist attacks of this new age are done indendepently without the help of your own government? You think the UN secures the sovereignty of nations? They’re doing a good job in Africa, huh?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
oh man that was good, now go back to your CNN Americans and to your BBC Brits and feel like you know what’s going on.
Honestly if you were offended by the origional topic that is sad, and you would piss your pants if you knew the shit that actually goes down in the world, daily. If you want to know the horrible truth though, the book “How the World Really Works” by A.B. Jones is a good place to start.
wow, we just can’t get the idea of conspiracies out of our heads eh?
They are oblivious to the world.
But this is quite understandable – firstly; they have the power to make the world adjust to them, rather than visa-versa.
And secondly; they have CNN, FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS and a humugus, global mass-media “infotainment” industry that effectively obscures the fact that they’re not really seeing the world, except through heavily filtered sources.
And many americans do wake up to the world beyond the dream-reality that they are so immersed in. But it’s something of an uphill battle. When they do catch on the can be quite a shock to them. Worse than 9-11.
Get used to it. It will only get worse.
I Think this thread is starting to go a little bit to far, I understand the beginning was a joke or a point of view, but now i think some members are taking this idea a little to far. I read all your reactions and opinions and didnt care or didnt bother me at all. But after reading this last post, this is a slap to the face, using a lesson to be learn in comparison of 9-11, out of line completely. I hope i dont seem out of line, but i see hatred coming through some posts, lately
