Achieved lucidity without trying. A few questions.

So about a month ago I was checking out a few facts on Sleep Paralysis on Wikipedia. I had barely any idea what it was, and I had no idea what Lucid Dreaming was either. Anyways the word ‘Lucid’ came up a few times in the SP article so not knowing what it meant I did a search on it, and so I gain knowledge on Lucid Dreaming.

In the LD article I found a link to this exact site, I checked out a few of the methods to induce a LD, had a look at some things to do whilst Lucid out of curiosity. My only problem was that I had no motivation to even attempt any of the techniques (MILD, WILD etc.)

So I looked at the forum, and didn’t actually make an account, instead (again out of curiosity) I simply checked out a few threads here, and I did that about once a week, until today.

Last night I decided to make an extremely small attempt at auto suggestion, I just told myself a few times before I went to sleep that I will know that I am dreaming, I didn’t expect it to work, but I figured there was no harm in trying.
I got nothing, I didn’t even remember any dreams I had that night. So my alarm clock went at 6:30am (normal time for me, getting ready for school and all). Normally my mother is up around that time, and I doze off on the couch for about half an hour, then she wakes me up to get ready.

So I dozed off as usual, and it happened, completely random, I was in my bedroom in a dream (I forget what I was doing, but I was alone) and I just suddenly thought to myself “I’m dreaming!”. Was it the auto-suggestion? I dont know, thats one question i’d like to ask, but there are a few minor problems I think I had.

Lack of Colour - So I was Lucid in my room, but everything was black and white. I did the first thing I could remember about what to do whilst Lucid, I begun to frantically rub my hands together as the dream appeared to be ‘fading’, which leads to another problem.

Inability to Rub Hands - When I put my hands together and begun to try and rub, they just wouldn’t budge, it was like there was an absolute ton of friction there, however I just ‘licked’ my palms and tried again and it was fine. That normal?

Lack of Sound/Inability to Talk - Now from what I know, Sleep Paralysis somewhat prevents you from sleeping, but I know for sure this wasn’t sleep paralysis. Anyways, the only actual sounds I could hear were my own thoughts, and the only thing I was thinking at the time what “What the crap? I am dreaming!”. This normal?

Materalized an Object on my First Try - I dont know how, I dont know why, all I know is that I did it. I have read a few threads here about people having trouble with materializing things, but alls I did was hold out my hand like I was holding a bottle, and a bottle of… something just appeared in my hand. I didn’t even think about it, I just raised my hand for a few seconds and it appeared. Again is this normal?

Trying to Change Locations Woke Me Up - So I tried to spontaniously change location after materializing a… bottle of something (which I just dropped), I just simply imagined my garden. Unfortunatly I woke. I did a few reality checks, and I was certain that it wasn’t just a false awakening.

Thanks for taking the time to read. This small Lucid experiance motivated me to start keeping a dream journal.

I had my first LD last night (wish I could have done it without trying!) and I had a very similar problem with the hand-rubbing. It must just be due to inexperience with LDs, I suppose. Keep going and see if it sorts itself out - I will.

I can’t say I’ve ever had that happen to me personally, but I know others have. Perhaps you could try creating some reason for it being black and white that has a simple solution. Like take out a remote control and turn the colour up.

It’s hard to say what is normal and what is not normal in a dream. Dreams can be so random at times and have a logic all of their own. It sounds like you came up with a creative solution and it worked, congrats

People seem to have different experiences and problems with lucid dreaming. I believe when you are dreaming, you create the world around you. This means any problems you are having doing something, are happening because you are not allowing the thing you want to happen, to happen.

It seems it can take some time for you to settle into the idea that you can do anything. It’s easy to accidentally or subconsciously apply the real world laws of physics to dreams too. It’s something we are very used to doing. If you drop something IWL, you expect it to fall if there is not a reason to expect otherwise. Dreams seem to be affected massively by your belief you can do something or that something will happen. You seem to get what you expect, if you expect failure, then it will happen and vice versa.

I want to transform in my own dreams, but I have a nagging thought that it is too hard to visualise. I know this isn’t true, from looking at past dreams. I have visualised far more complicated things than a simple transformation, but that belief is there, it has stopped me transforming twice now. :bored: A part of me expects the dream to become unstable, and, well it happens. From my perspective you didn’t doubt that the object would appear, and got what you expected.

It might be possible that your REM cycle ended. Although some people find changing the scene can cause the dream to become unstable. I believe this is because we think, a drastic change in your dream, might wake you up. When it is that belief that wakes you up. I have had the most obscure of normal dreams, that chopped and changed scenes and perspectives all the time. After thinking about it I didn’t wake up in them, why should it be any different in an LD?
