It’s usually said that LDs and OBEs are basically the same, but a serious hypothesis would be that:
LDs are conscious dream states IN the body.
while…
OBEs are conscious dream states OUT of the body.
I’d like to proceed to a kind of opinion poll, from all of you.
if you want to express your point of view in details, go on, that would be great, but all I’m asking everyone to do is answer by “I agree” or “I don’t agree”.
OBEs are EXPERIENCES of being outside your body, but the experience is not identical to what is actually happening. I am more satisfied with the down-to-earth explanation that it is an illusion. We cannot trust our senses!
I’m a skeptic. I don’t think OBE’s are really out of body, but the term does indeed suggest it (but I’m not certain that was the point).
I do not belive OBE’s to actually be out of body experiences. I think both of them are lucid dreams, only in OBE’s you might not be that ‘lucid’ cos you think you’re actually outside of your body (Hah ).
I do however find the power of the mind very interesting, and I like to play with the idea that maybe, inside the dreaming state, your mindpower is at maximum, and you might just actually be able to move things with your mind. So if you’d in the dream imagine your bedroom just as it is IRL, and then using mindpower in your dream to move something (obviously it will work cos it’s a dream), and you might perhaps just move it IRL (Which could explain OBE peoples stories about how they moved stuff in their OBE and woke up and found the stuff to actually be moved).
Though this OBE theory of mine is something I see as a ‘fun thought’, and nothing I truly believe in.
If you mean by them the feeling that you are out of your body while you are falling to sleep, then i disagree. You are not out of your body, but you are just FEELING that you are out of your body. I label them as OBE-s related to LD-s, because it all happens “in your head”.
If you mean by them that your “soul” indeed exits your body (in NDE, or similar), then it’s real OBE that is not related to LD. Those experiences can be easily proven, but unfortunately i have yet to read any such story that sufficiently proves it (maybe i have not read enough such stories that claim to be real OBE-s).
I would say that a LD is when you are in control, but OBE is an extremly higher sense of awareness, so something is definetly different about them. I don’t know about being out side of your body but something is definetly more special with them from LDs, at least from the few that I have had.
poe, you say you had a few OBEs, maybe you can tell us what made you distinguich between them and LDs, was it only the fact that you were more lucid than usual? or were there something else…
also, I would like to know if the way you achieved your OBEs is the same you achieve LDs with (supposing there’s a difference between them). I mean were you intending a LD and got an OBE or was it intended from the begining?
From some things I’ve read they do sound like they are very close experiences, if not the same. I rather wait and see if I have an OBE before I make up my mind in what I beleive . Although I tend to not beleive you’re actually out of your body…
But I’ve seen many people (maybe not all, but the greates part maybe) saying they are definitly different, that there’s something special about the OBE’s.
It would indeed be cool for someone who’s had them to make things clearer for us.
EDIT: I forgot to mention… I think I almost had an OBE once, actually. It felt REALLY weird. I can’t even explain the feeling. It did feel like I was breaking or ripping or even being streched maybe. The weird thing was that when I say “I” here, it wasn’t my body. It didn’t feel like my body was suffering these things…
Anyway, I woke up very disoriented. I’m not sure in what I beleive in, as I said above, but I do beleive there might be something “special” about OBE’s… something more than a dream that you’re outside of your body…
I intended on a LD and got a OBE, I’ve only had 2 or 3 that I can possibly remember. I don’t know how to say it, but a OBE just feels more “real” than a LD. Like its real life.
