Can LD's unlock old memories?

I had an my fourth LD last night (yay!) and something really strange happened. See, I had a really close friend called Katie who died when I was five years old. I don’t have any photographs of her or anything, as we were in different classes at the time. I think about her frequently, but because I was so young at the time, I’ve forgotten what she looks like. I can only picture bits and pieces. In my LD last night, I was at my old house, and all these people were there. People who I used to know, but had forgotten about. I couldn’t control the DC’s, you see. The fact that I was seeing them at my old house was my DS, and was the reason I become lucid in the first place. So, I was seeing all these old people, and then I saw Katie. It was so surreal - it really looked like her, even though, in concious life, I simply couldn’t picture it, which frustrated me. When I saw her in the dream, it was as though I found an old picture of her. Do dreams have the ability to do that? Or was it just my unconcious mind thinking that I was seeing her? I know this is a little off topic, and I hate to sort of, go on about my boring personal life, but it’s just something that’s been on my mind a lot lately.

It could be the image that your subconscious remembers but you don’t physically remember her. I hope that makes sense. Lucid Dreams could unlock your old memories because of your subconscious remembers it. (I need to study about the subconscious)

That sounds very realistic Kt, your subconcious remembers very tiny details about your life, especially things you never even noticed (conciously). So i wouldnt be any surprised if your could unlock hidden memories with the help of lucidity.

Thanks a ton. It’s so weird - I completely forgot about all those people who I used to live near. We lived in this tiny town in the country and I was back there again… and I could see all these things that had slipped my mind entirely.

I love dreams.

Freaky awesome.

yes , i think indeed it can unlock memorys, (but only ones you acctualy have perceived , but i think thats not the question)

So long as you have some memory of what you are trying to recall, yes.

Any state of deep relaxation can be used to recall memory, from speed hypnosis to meditation. I would think that if you have a memory to work from you could use that in a lucid dream to create the environment and recall specific things.

However, because it is a dream and dreams become memories as you wake up, it could be easy to mistake dream memory for actual memory. Unless it is something that when it happens you get that “OMG how did I ever forget that” type of memory then there’s always going to be that uncertainty.

It really depends on what you want to remember I think, for people you can probably do it fairly easily. I often have normal dreams about old school people that I weren’t even friends with and don’t give a thought to in WL, but in the dream they are a carbon copy of themselves for that era.

This is an important caution. If you’re lucid dreaming, it should be possible that you’re creating entirely fabricated memories in the same way that it’s possible to create fabricated memories in waking life. This is why, for example, eye witness accounts in criminal trials are so inconsistent.

True… This reminds me of a dream I had another day. I met this guy who I didn’t talk to in a long time. I knew we used to be good friends, but we didn’t see each other anymore. When I woke up, I couldn’t remember his looks, name or whatever, but I still felt like I’d met someone. I’m not sure now if he was just a random DC or was based on someone from my past
