Could an LD be more realistic than real life?

Um… no. It can’t.

When this question was raised in the Q&A thread, I seem to be the only one to believe that an LD can’t be more realistic than real life. It can be as real or less real and that’s it.

The definitions for ‘more realistic’ were along the following lines:

  1. Better senses (including 360 degree vision)
  2. Extra colours/shape
  3. Sounds never heard in WL
  4. Being more than one person at once
  5. More vivid/more detailed

Okay, no I’ll go through these one by one…

  1. Having a better sense does not make the world more real. Does looking through binoculars make the world more real? They improve that particular sense a lot, but don’t make the world more real.

  2. Impossible shapes/colours. Well, as these don’t exist and as such are not real, they simply can’t be realistic.

  3. Any sort of sound can be reproduced in real life. Just because you haven’t heard it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t or can’t exist.

  4. Now come on. This is the exact oposite of realism…

  5. If something is more than real life, then it is no longer realistic. It has become unrealistic. Real life is the peak - if go any less, then it’s less realistic, and if you go any more, it’s less realistic again.

Therefore, I propose that an LD can’t be any more realistic than real life. If you still feel otherwise feel free to debate. If you feel the same way, feel free to debate on my half .

It depends on the definition of the word:real (or realistic).
Of course if somebody derives it from WL and treats WL as the definition for “real” then it is useless to debate about it.
Because by this definition WL is real and we can’t compare anything to it.
If we have a definition that doesn’t depend on WL(or doesn’t depend on so much) then it can be compared with experiences about “other worlds”(LD worlds). We test which world fulfilled the definition better.
There can be attributes of realness and we can compare them, IWL attributes to LD attributes. And for somebody theese attributes seem to be more realistic in LD. They are more stable, they have greater values(I am too mathematical ) or something like that. Of course 360 degree vision and the other things can boost this feeling up. IMO that’s why they claim it more real.
BTW I think they can be.

Yup, you’ve nailed that point to the wall and put it behind a few inches of bulletproof glass
I couldn’t agree more

Shows that stuff can be more real then reality, but ofcourse this is only a philosophical way of seeing stuff.

Ok, so say you have 20/400 vision (Like my dad). In a dreamscape you have better then perfect vision. You can see as far or short as you can without obstacles. Lets say some of your nerve endings have been shorted. You can feel anything, no matter how sensitive. You can feel dust in an LD. Lets say you’re mute, you can talk as loud as you want in an LD, there’s no limit like you have IRL with your vocal cords. If your hearing is going or you’re deaf, you can hear a whisper from miles away if you want to in a dream.

In other words, all your senses are just perfect, perfect > the imperfect real life. As Pedro said “The world you know is a model based on reality”

And you didnt say “Could an LD be more real then real life?” you said realistic Realistic Is how we define reality, how clear it is or something, its not necesarrily real  I agree that nothing can be more “real” then “real” but in a dream we can percieve and do things at a higher “real” then IRL.

It’s kind of hard to argue since we don’t have an accepted definition of real/realistic that we’re arguing for. That being said, things in LDs do seem more real/clear/vivid/intense to me. It’s kind of hard to explain but RL seems much more illusory to me after an LD. Even though the LD is chaotic and random at times, it seems more credible. It’s tough to explain unless you’ve experienced it, but the “real” reality - it just seems like there’s something not quite right about it. Like it’s a dream that you can’t wake up from or something. Maybe we’re trying to say which is the better color: red or green (the answer is green), but I can’t help but feel LDs are more real than RL too.
