i first had a lucid dream in college about 15 years ago without trying. i was amazed that i was in a dream and aware of that fact, i didn’t even know that such a thing was possible. i told some friends about it and one said ‘yah that is lucid dreaming, i get about 1 a week’. i thought it was interesting but never devoted any effort to trying to induce them. but that is where i learned the term.
recently i have given up caffeine to improve my sleep and have gotten interested in lucid dreaming. i am hopeful that i’ll have good luck with it because i have very good dream recall and i frequently ask myself in dreams whether i am dreaming or not, i just never press the point far enough to realize that i am dreaming. i frequently have dreams of flying or being able to long jump very long distances, but never come to the realization that this is not something humans can do, on the earth anyway.
this morning i set the alarm for 6am, woke up, then reset it for 7 and hit the snooze button every 10 minutes until 8:00.
from 6-7 i don’t remember any dreams. from 7-8 i remember only the last one. 10 minutes on the snooze bar is not quite long enough to fall back to sleep and dream, sometimes yes, sometimes no. every time i woke up i said to myself ‘do a reality check in the next dream’. but i didn’t manage too.
the last dream i was lazily riding a bike back and forth in front of the building i work in. someone cruises on a skateboard on his way into the building and clips me because i didn’t get out of his way fast enough. I though “that’s odd, I don’t usually ride my bike to work and I have never seen a skateboard on the plaza”. I followed him into the building and then there was a coke machine in the main lobby which is not there in the real world, but i didn’t pick up on that either. I put a $20 into the machine expecting lots of dollar coins back for change, but I got mostly nickles. I looked very closely at the coins to see if they were dollar coins or not, but they were nickles with the likeness of jefferson. Then I made a selection on the machine and it spat out the remainder of the change in dollar coins, at which point I woke up.
That’s a good technique. Just keep up. You’ll probably notice in your next dreams that they’ll be more and more related to RC’s and lucid dreaming. It will be the sign that you are on the right way.
