Hey have any of you people ever seen a Solar Eclipse IRL or an LD? Lately I have been very interested, and really want to see one.
I have seen the '99 eclips in north France. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life! I would certainly advise ayone to go and see one if possible… unfortunately they are quite rare …
I sadly cannot say i have… But i saw a nearly full one in spain in 1999 i think it was… The only thing left of the sun was in a shape of the new mood, like this “)”
I wish i could experience a complete one, but it is simply not gonna happen anywhere near where i live during my lifetime.
Yello. Yes, I have seen a solar eclipse. Seen at least two total solar eclipses over my life time that I can remember, and many more partials. Lunar eclipses are cool, too… we seem to have them quite often, in fact there was one a couple weeks ago here (USA). I’ve never seen one in a dream before, though… I bet that would be something to remember!
Isn’t natural phenomena like this great?.. it really makes us conscious of the incomprehensively huge scale of our world/universe. Some nights, if you look at the moon completely objectively, in the right frame of mind, the immense scale of the thing pops out and becomes awe-inspiring… almost frightening. Well I’m a bit off topic now…
I’m sorry, Tomas, that is kind of sad. You do have aurora borealis where you live, dont you? I know that probably doesn’t make up for it, but there are people who would kill to see the northern lights once in their life.
yeah, we have a bit of nothern lights during winter.
so was that bs they fed me as a kid, that looking at the solar eclipse would burn my eyes and make me blind? If so that pisses me off they jipped me out of seeing a solar eclipse. I always looked at the sun b4, i dont see how lookin at a solar eclipse for a split second could make u blind, but wutever, they certainly made it seem like a life or death thing to look up into the sky that day. I hate adult influence over kids.
Trust me, it is not good to stare at the sun even for shorter periods of time… I speak from personal experience.
I watched a eclipse here in 1995 or something i think using a pair of very dark sun glasses… well, i ended up damaging my right eye and i now seem to have some small blind spots on that eye… Like if i read some very small letters with that eye, then sometimes something seem to float over making a letter partially invisible.
There are safe ways of doing it, using a pair of glasses designed for watching the sun.
I saw the '99 eclipse in Brussels and it was 99%, which makes a HUGE difference compared to full eclipse . I had exams, otherwise I would have gone to France.
My relative flew over to Hawaii to see a complete Solar Eclipse and he told me it was a fascinating, but also very disoreinting experience. Have you guys that have seen an eclipse find it disorienting at all?
I have seen one… it wasnt much of a eclipse, cus here in Israel, the sun eclipse is small… when I looked at the sand it had a color like i have some sight problems
i saw one when i was a child…neatest thing i ever saw., besides naked women!
Never seen a full one.
If you don’t wear the specialy designed sun glasses and stare at the sun for more than a second or two, it will damage your eyes, just like Tomad said. Trust me, don’t do it.
Of coarse, it’d probably be a touch safer with an eclipse (and alot safer if it reached a full eclipse), but all that ‘BS’ that everyone says at the time is cos everyone woul be watching the eclipse (and thus - the sun).
Eclipses are funny though, aren’t they? They only occur because the moon’s distance and size makes it apear to be exactly the same size of the sun (thanks to it’s size and distance as well). If any of those variables were different, we wouldn’t have them.
I was in the small full eclipse zone during the 1999 eclipse, but unfortunately a big cloud floated right in front of the sun at the moment of truth However, the atmosphere was so magical: it went from light to very dark in almost 30 seconds, and on the horizon you could see the boundary with the 99% zone, where it was much brighter. During those precious moments, all those natural sounds just stopped and it became utterly silent… Then, after 20 seconds or so, all the dogs went crazy
Too bad we didn’t see much, but it was breathtaking nonetheless.
I was in the Greenwich Observatory park during the 1999 full eclipse of the sun. Great moment !
i have seen one, once. i was in denmark at the time…
oh, and by the way. NO ONE will ever see another total solar eclipse. ever. the moon is constantly moving away from our planet, and the next time it happens, it will be so far away that it can’t cover the sun completely.
damn shame, really…
Kimius thats not true, the moon only moves at a very very very slow speed away from the earth, there have been full eclipses for centuries and they will also stay for some time to come. Also the moon’s distance from earth during a solar eclips is variable, some eclipses arent full and are so called ring-eclipses, which also happens now and then (but more frequently in the future since the moon will be moving away steadily).
That is not true… there will be plenty of eclipses before it is too far away to block the sunlight.
But yeah, it is true that it is moving away from us and will eventually leave earths gravity field.
I believe the moon moves around 4cm further away for each year.
There was one in Chicago (all of midwest area I guess) on Chirstmas of I think 2000 but it wasn’t full, just partial. But I got to watch it with these weird tin foil-like glasses. Wasn’t all that amazing, but cool date. Can’t wait to see a full eclipse, plus I’d love to see northern lights
I remember one back in the early 70s. It was eerie, because the light level is low, but shadows are still sharp, not like during a cloudy sky where shadows soften.
Gives the world a surreal appearance.
I used a simple piece of cardboard with a hole punched in it, which projects an image onto a white sheet of paper. here’s an example:
