How do I use FILD properly?

Hello, I’ve recently got back into lucid dreaming, and I remember I experimented with a few different induction methods, namely MILD, WBTB and a little bit of FILD. I liked the idea of FILD because it seemed like a version of WILD that was easy for beginners to use.

The problem with it was that you have to use it after you briefly wake up for a minute or so, according to the guide I saw. I found it hard to stay focused on my fingers moving and ended up drifting off to sleep every time I tried it.

Does anyone on here have any tips for me to use to stay aware and concentrated? Or is it just a matter of practise, in that I should get more focused with each attempt, and after a while of trying it, I’ll get into a LD?

I need to add that I’m staying asleep for 4.5-5 hours before trying this. My sleep schedule is that I get into bed at 10:00pm and hopefully fall asleep by 10:30pm, therefore waking up at 3:30am, which is when my alarms wake me up.

Do I need more sleep to reach the REM stage before attempting it?
