has anyone noticed how certain things in dreams, even lucid ones, which are halerious while ur in the dream make no sence at all once you wake up?
heh. I normally find it’s the other way round. I can’t remember finding anything particularly funny in my dreams, but I normally wake up and laugh at all the stupid things I’ve done.
well a while ago i remember in a lucid dream (althought not a very vivid one) one of my dream characters told a joke and i laughed so hard i had a false awakening. once i really woke up i thought about the joke and it made no logcal sence. i’ve also noticed that this works with philosophy. a few nights ago one of my dream characters had cheated on her bf or something and was trying to philosophically justify what she did. what she said was something along the lines of “the relationship between a bf and gf is derived from that of a pope to his followers…” and at the time i was thinking that that was a very good point, but after i woke up i couldn’t think any connection between the two and it made no sence whatsoever. i’m guessing this is because we are in a different state of mind in dreams and if we are not thinking critically and rationally our brains try to immitate certain things that we have classified as “humor” or “philosophy” in the past so that they sound right in the dream but when you actually think about them logically they make no sence.
I’ve had a bunch of dreams, including a few lucid ones in which something I said, read, or heard seemed very profound but when I woke up I was kind of like “Um, okay, I’m confused.”
I think its part of our brain telling the other part of the brain that tries to think logically not to try to make sense of things; just take it and enjoy it for what it is.
I’m reminded of Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle where God creates man, then man says to God “What is the meaning of all of this? There has to be some meaning.” So God shakes his head, turns away and says “Fine, you figure something out…” Someone else will have to find a more accurate citation of this, but I think its along those lines.
ur post got me really interested in cat’s cradle so i got it and found the exact quote you were refering to:
In the beginning, God created the earth, and he looked upon it in His cosmic loneliness.
And God said, “Let Us make living creatures out of mud, so the mud can see what We have done.” And God created every living creature that now moveth, and one was man. Mud as man alone could speak. God leaned close as mud as man sat up, looked around, and spoke. Man blinked. “What is the purpose of all this?” he asked politely.
“Everything must have a purpose?” asked God.
“Certainly,” said man.
“Then I leave it to you to think of one for all this,” said God.
And He went away.
awesome book btw thnx for telling me about it.
