As I drift off to sleep, I am conscious of the fact that I am starting to fall asleep because my thoughts become incongruous and illogical. Many times I realize “i’m falling asleep now, because this line of thought is nonsensical”.
so here’s a question I have. I know that when you have already been asleep for several hours, and get woken up and hit the snooze button you can go almost immediately back into a dream.
but when retiring for the evening, is it really possible to go straight from consciousness to dreaming? i thought you had to go through a few sleep phases before reaching REM sleep.
in other words is ‘WILD’ only usable when going back to sleep after being awaken?
Yes it is but it is harder and can take longer. You have to practice a lot and have patients. In fact if you are really ambitions you can be conscious through all stages of sleep. Also, keep in mind that you can dream in other stages of sleep not just REM.
Why wouldn’t that be true? Try to google for non-rem dreams. I have remembered dreams after sleeping for only 10 minutes. Non-REM dreams have a different “feeling” than REM dreams, they feel more like I have been “doing something” or “reading something”.
My brother has stayed conscious through all the sleep stages through meditation. It was boring, but possible.
To go back on topic, I would say that the irregular thoughts are a form of HI. I get the same thing, especially if i fall asleep slowly.
This is true. Look it up. Recent dream research has shown dreaming occurs in all stages of sleep. True, most dreaming activity occurs in REM sleep, but dreaming can ocuur at almost any time in the night. Haven’t you ever beem EXTREMELY tired and started dreaming before you are even fully asleep?
I agree with Siiw that what you experience was HI. Lots of us have had similar experiences. That stage of consciousness can be a bit confusing at times depending on how deep you are.
I do know that I have had non-rem dreams and you can tell the difference. They just don’t feel as real as REM dreams and if you are not lucid in them they tend to feel kind of choppy (best word I can think of to explain it right now). Originally I thought they were just low level lucid dreams because they were in color. We previously thought that non-REM dreams were in black and white. As it turns out that is not the case. It all depends on how deep you are. The closer to delta sleep you get the less visuals you have. If you happen to be conscious in deep delta you will not get any visuals at all. This stage is what we lucid dreamers will often refer to as the void. From a lucid dreaming point of view there is not much you can do here but wait for dreaming to start again again. However, eastern religions consider this to be a very powerful and spiritual state of consciousness.
Ah man, been there, done that. My thoughts get “louder” until it sounds like someone’s saying them. One particularly memorable one from a few nights ago was “Women physics teachers don’t take critical hits.” True wisdom indeed. Another one I had was one of my classmates yelling “F***ing [something]!!”
I’m very familiar with those strange random thoughts. I often hear people saying things to me, and although a part of me knows they’re not really there, I sometimes react. Unfortunately, I’ve never successfully stayed conscious through the end of this and had a WILD. I haven’t tried much, though. Mostly been going for MILD and autosuggestion for now.
I had one such thought a few nights ago that was so wonderfully stupid that I wrote it down in my dream journal in order to remember it. It was one line from a song that I hope was never written–a man’s voice crooning the words “sleep with your circus pants on.” What the heck?! The notes were F E D E D E C, with a cool syncopated rhythm. Go figure.
I am going to also say that this is false. Dreams can happen in REM and non-REM sleep. The biggest difference is that REM dreams are very vivid and lucid. Also, I believe the non-REM dreams are shorter and less likely, but can still happen.
Yes, you can dream in both REM and non-rem sleep. Now the following is just my opinion based on my experiences. I believe the vividness, length, control, etc. depends on what stage of sleep you are in. If you are in deep delta sleep you may not get any visuals at all and there is not much you can do in this state but wait. Moreover, this stage can last a long time. The other side of the coin is that you may sleep too light in which case the dreams may not be quite as vivid and you may even have trouble just staying in the dream because you are so close to your waking state. Then of course there is everything in the middle where even some non rem dreams can seem fairly vivid and you can exert a great deal of control over them. A lot of this is hard to prove since I do not have a lab or equipment to test all of this. Hopefully, as we continue to practice and experiment we will be able to gain a better understanding of non rem dreams.
It’s also possible to fall straight from consciousness to REM sleep when you’re really tired.
Also, most people (people who do not practice LDing especially) get lucid dreams in the twilight stage of sleep, but Oneiros is right that these dreams aren’t as vivid or detailed.
