Ok so for the first time ever i decided to try MILD before i slept, not WILD. So in my dream i was in my living room. I don’t remember what caused me to question if I was dreaming but I decided to do a RC. I counted my fingers. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11—Wait. That’s not right!! 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8?—That’s not right either!!! I didn’t remember to do the nose RC…but I wish I did to try it anyways. So i walked around my living room and the first thing that came into my head was “FLY!!” So I went and tried to jump…I got like a foot off the ground and landed. So then I tried to walk through my glass backdoor. No luck. Once again I tried to fly, this time the superman way…Nothing. I Don’t know why I did, but I decided to spin…I did, and ended up somewhere else…in a NORMAL DREAM!!!
How can I do something? I was totally confident…I don’t get why I didn’t fly or walk through the door.
I’ve heard that flying is pretty hard to grasp. You can try flying like a bird, not flapping every second, but every once in awhile, flap your arms to keep altitude. If you have every really watched a bird fly for a distance, this might be a little more clear.
But for the walking through the glass, it sounds like you have some doubt that you can’t walk through it. So even though you thought you were totally confident, maybe since it was only your second time lucid, you had a little doubt subconsciously.
Having a lot of control is really difficult to do the first few tries, not to mention it varies from dream to dream. When I want to fly, I usually jump from something high up to get a little lift off. As long as you’re not expecting to hit the ground, you usually won’t. Instead of concentrating on not hitting the ground, concentrate on the fact you CAN’T hit the ground. As for walking through glass, I have no tips on that, I usually just break it.
It seems that, for me, the ability to control myself and the environment varies based on certain aspects within the dream, most commonly the quality of it.
If I’m standing in a room that seems a perfect replica of reality, I tend to find it more difficult to “defy” the physical laws of waking life. When this happens I generally think of an idea or aid to help me with my current goal.
I’ll give an example. In my most recent WILD I initially had a problem with flying. The quality of the dream was incredible, and thus, my ability to fly was temporarily impaired.
I found myself standing in an enormous field of grass, surrounded by lines of trees in the distance. I attempted to fly, but all I could do was jump. I then remembered how my brother would fly in his dreams. Out of nowhere he would sense a gust of wind coming from behind him, then he’d run and jump, allowing the wind to push him into the air. Sure enough, I sensed the wind and began to run with it. The next time I jumped, the wind pushed me skyward and I flew with ease after that.
If at first you don’t succeed, try again with a different approach. You’ll get it, and victory will be oh so sweet.
Also, whenever I have trouble walking through a wall, I just turn around and walk backwards through it.

To do anything unusual in a LD you cant just ‘do it’ and have it work, you need to EXPECT it to work. To convince yourself that what you are doing is perfectly normal.
And yea, dont expect to just be able to take off. What I do is get a big running start, and basically keep jumping as I run. The jumps gradually get higher and longer until eventually I end up not hitting the floor again.
Personally I find jumping massive distances much more fun. Try that.
That sounds…fun? Mighty Mutant. What if I scare myself awake? O.o
And Silvastris, I don’t know how to ‘expect’ it to happen. I have common sense…I do know that flying isn’t completely normal.
If you wake up dont worry, you will always have more chanes to go back to sleep dream and become lucid. So many people make the mistake of trying to rush things.
Its better to build a castle on conreate then on sand. if you rush, things will come crumbling down around you.
When I first started lucid dreaming, i couldn’t do much either, after time it comes and then it is effortless. try to pretend, works wonders, imagine as clearly as you can throughout the day the feeling of flying, and when you next become lucid, recall that feeeling and just try it and see what happens.
you are your own law inside lucid dreaming, the more you think about something during the day the more likely you will be able to re create it inside a dream. Dont worry about laws or you can do this here and you cant do that there, just relax, know it will happen and have fun, it makes it much more enjoyable and makes it happen more often.
A good tip I’ve read on this forum before is to use something else in your dream to enable you to fly. Say for example, you can’t just fly on your own, why not grow some wings? Or maybe find a jetpack? Basicly, find something that lets you fly (It doesn’t even have to make sense, it could be a hat that lets you fly, for example.)
But still, the best method is just knowing that you can fly. It’s easy to think, “But human’s can’t fly.”, and ruin your chances, but you’ve just got to think about it logically. A dream is completely generated by your mind, and so you have 100% control over every little detail. Once you start thinking like that, you’ll be able to do all sorts of things.
