need help remembering book

hey recently i remember a book i read a long long time ago.
i dont remember the title, author, publisher, year or names of any characters
or locations. all i can do is describe some of the summary, but im hoping some1 might recognize and help me out.

the fiction novel started out with a young man waking up with amnesia in a prison cell. he doesnt know who he is or how he got there. after a while he manages to break outta his cell (i think) were he meats… im gonna say there was around 8-12 other young men around his age all with amnesia. i recall one of the guys being like mentally challenged in a wheel chair. anyway all these chaps are stuck in this prison which is abandoned with a mystery of who they are, how they got there how to escape yatty yatta. i seem to recall it took place around renaissance times for some reason.
i remember a significant part about a dolly bringing them food and one of the characters was really good at climbing.
thats it. hopefully some1 knows this book.

Gare, I don’t know the book, but after tweaking a google search for a while, I came up with a bunch of might-be results. Haven’t checked many of them, but here’s the search query, you can play around with it. I’m sure that query looks terribly alien, so here’s a little explanation on what it does:

~amnesia

The tilde tells Google to search for similar terms and expressions, like “memory loss”.

(break|escape) (~jail|cell)

The (x|y) notation means “either x or y or both”. The tilde before “jail” is because I’m too lazy to write “|prison”, Google probably doesn’t know any other relevant synonym.

book fiction

Pretty obvious why they’re here, keep them amongst the last items in your query so that they don’t have any priority.

-season -television

The minus removes comments with such words. This is to avoid Prison Break from flooding your search results.

I recommend you tweak that query a while, try to put whatever strikes you as remarkable in the plot (wheelchairs, for one, don’t seem to be) — if it doesn’t help you find the book online, it’ll at least help you fish some extra memories.

did…anyone else know you could tweak searches like this in google??

That is SO sweet.

I knew some of it, but definitly not the OR nor the Tilde.

To the OP: Have you checked “The woman is Dead”?

no its not “the woman is dead”

ive tried searching google and just cant find it.
i know i read it at least 12 years ago, which means it had to be published before 1996 and i seem to remember it being an old book.
