Panic Attack When Becoming Lucid

Hi,

I’m really new to Lucid Dreaming, but I have managed to get lucid a few times so far, by doing reality checks all the time. My problem is that every time I get lucid, I get really bad pains in my chest, and the more I try to resist waking up (like spinning on the spot or whatever) the worse the pains get. I guess it is a panic attack, as it gets better very soon after I have woken up…

Has anyone else had the same problem? Does anyone know how to get over it? I can’t stay lucid more than a 10 or 20 seconds at the moment…

Thanks!

Hey philassheton, welcome to the forum.

I think the only way for you is to convince yourself that there is absolutely NO need whatsoever to panic during a LD. Excited, ok, but no need for stress! Tell yourself before sleep that when you become lucid, you will be calm and relaxed (autosuggestion-style). What you could also try (but that’s probably harder) is to do a relaxation excercise once you become lucid. Anyway, I think if you work on this it will become better each time you have a LD, so good luck with it!

Welcome to LD4all, philassheton!
I’m afraid that nobody here has experienced the same problem. So it will be difficult to give you an advice. You said that your chest pains are panic attacks, but do you feel panicked when you are in a LD?
It seems that your problem is due to an inconscious resistance. Do you know what could be its cause? Did someone prejudice you against LD’ing or something like that?

yeah i think it’s prolly a inconscious resistance, like a defence mechanism.
i found meanings for psychosomatic pains in certain places, i mean pain for no apparent reason. i just can remember back pain - insecurity.

i have a similar experience, with LD’ing, but it’s not a pain. the dream just fades away when i get lucid. if i’m in the beggining of the dream during WILD. if i just get lucid during a deep stage of the dream than everything goes fine! +/-

Well once i tried to commit Suicide in my LD because of extreme stress. I had had fun but then i thought to myself “its time to wake up” but i couldnt (eventually it was international news in my LD) but anyway i hijacked a car and drove into a stone wall at 120mph but i survived.I was really really scared by this time.I tried many different methods of suicide in my LD but none of them would work. I eventually woke up for absoulutly no reason while walking down the street.

Just thought id share my experiance/opinion with you
NEWB

Newb I’ve been there before too (although I did not become suicidal). Had a LD and somehow I just could not wake when I wanted to, and that was pretty freightening for a moment. The only thing left to me was just “being” in the dream untill I woke up, because I knew very well that in the end I would (unless you die in your sleep ofcourse, but that doesnt happen unless your very ill or so). Point is, if you are lucid, you should have enough mental faculties to realise that nothing harmfull can ever happen. Just force yourself to think over your situation, dont go panicing blindly.

I wouldn’t be scared! I would love to be in a lucid dream for ever! Man, in all my lucid dreams I am trying to get all the fun out before I wake up. I want to stay in a lucid dream FOREVER.
