Realising I'm dreaming and waking up?

Hi I’m new around here
I’m really interested in lucid dreaming and the general science of the human brain and behaviour.

I’ve got a question, a few times I’m dreaming and then I realise I’m dreaming but then I start waking up. I try very hard to stay asleep but it doesn’t work, in the end I wake up.

What do I do about this?

Nice you found us :content:
So , first of all , stay calm when you get lucid , in most cases , waking up is a result of excitement over being lucid , so , when you realise you are dreaming , keep a cool head , look at your hands for a few seconds and tell yourself that you are in control.
I hope that helps

Hi and welcome.

Waking up after getting lucid is a common problem, unfortunately… specially when you’re first getting into LD’ing, since everything is so new and interesting.

There are some tricks to try to make you stay longer in the dream, like spinning around your axis and rubbing your hands. I myself have found that grabbing onto something in the dream works well for me. Just grab any object in the dream and rub it and squeeze it and notice how real it feels. That feeling makes me feel like I’m actually there, so it’s harder to wake up…

Hello and welcome from me too!

Like said, waking up is really a thing that is common when you first start out. If you get excited, try to cool it down. If you feel like waking up, then try doing something what mattiasdavis and Sakoda said.

I also find grabbing into objects much better way. Grab into, for example a chair if it’s near you and really try to feel the material and the shape of it. This works usually really well.

And the more times you get lucid, the less " excited " you will become because it’s much already a much more familliar feeling.

Good luck! :woot:

Thanks very much everybody!!

edit: Is there any strategies on making sure I do things to realise that I’m dreaming while dreaming? I rarely ever do reality checks for some reason.

Keep a DJ for one month straight. I know I say this every 2 seconds to new people, but it really IS the key to sucess I dont care what anyone else says.

BTW - whats your avatar, it looks familiar?

As LucidEpiphany said it is a good idea to keep a journal of your dreams as it will help improve your recall. Once you have kept the journal for a time you can read over some of your dreams and look for things that seem to come up regularly. Then during the day when you are awake you can train yourself to do reality checks when you see these things. You could also try training yourself to do reality checks when you see common dream signs. Like when things don’t work as expected, or when things feel dreamy.
