Self induced nightmares. anyone?

ok so dont know if im the only one. or if everyone has this phenomenon.
so this is what happened. it usually starts when im looking into a mirror in a dream. (im not lucid at this stage) i start to notice how weird i look. i then usually TRY to make a freaky face. or turn the lights of. or get a lamp and make it hit my face a weird way. this sends chemicals that induce fear into me. so basically i get scared. i dont wake up tho. i just reapear in another place. and i do the same thing. (not always with a mirror tho) i try to scare myself. try to make a horror dream. anything that might turn into a nightmare i pursue.
but this time. i tried to wake up. not because i was scared. but because i didnt want to be trapped in this weird continuance of a dream. (also. after the first phase. i become lucid. lucid enough to know its a dream. i also have no urge to try to change anything) waking up is sometimes difficult. but its never a jolt. i usually. just find my body. and fade into it.
and thats my self induced nightmare.

By self-induced nightmare do you mean having a lucid dream in which you feel something horrible is going to happen to you? I’ve had one of those before, in which I was afraid that a monster was hiding around every corner.

No, I believe he means having a lucid dream which he WANTS to turn to a nightmare.

yes that is what i mean. its very weird. its like going to a horror movie. you know its gonna scare you. but you go anyway.
the thing i dont like about them. is…
its not really a real nightmare. something happens and then i reapear somewhere else. THE ENTIRE TIME. over and over again until i wake up or i become lucid completely

so- you’re trying to find out how to stop the pattern so that you can just entire the nightmare lucidly?

well really i dont care if i finish the nightmare or not. or if im lucid or not.
i just dont like the jumping around from story to place. its just to repetitious.

This is pretty cool, this might be a good way to teleport for beginners, like myself.

If you are trying to induce a lucid nightmare, perhaps you could spawn something quite horrifying, maybe that would work. :wolfbite:

the inducing of the nightmare. really isnt that hard.
usually i just look in a mirror. and from there. situations just appear.
and another thing. i have no wanting or urge to run away. kinda weird but idk.

Of course you don’t have an urge to run away. That’s cause you are lucid.About that reappearing issue, try to focus on your current enviroment/room/whatever.And yeah, like the guy above said, also try spawning something.

Sorry man but i dont understand why you WANT Nightmares instead of having a great lucid time???

Ps: You talked something abut going in a horror film, so why being actor and not regisseur. If i were you I would choose someone i dont like, build me a room with a tv (or a mirror^^) and then i would make HIM actor in YOUR Horrorfilm.

Perhaps you could use autosuggestion or MILD just before bed to keep yourself in a single dream scene. You could probably use a mantra such as: “When I am dreaming, I will always stay in the same dream environment.” I’m not sure if that will work, but its better than nothing. :content:

actually thats a really good idea. still be scary but fun at the same time. and i will be in control of everything.
but just a little different
instead. create something scary (like freddy or jason or something)
and follow him around (like im watching) yet, be in control of what he does. sorta like being in a movie.

ya dont know if anybody has been in a movie/tv (in a LD)
but it is awesome. and kinda weird.

I want to try it. But I think I will not get scared. I’ve wanted nightmares before, but I never got them. Then when I had given up, I had some. Not close to that time though. But trying to get nightmares seems to me like facing the scary things, and that tends to make them less scary, literally. Like a big tiger becomes small and cute.
I want monsters and stuff.

i hear ya
well when you go to a horror movie. its easy to not be scared (for me anyway) simply predict whats happening look at it with a technical mind. and just laugh (cause alot of scary movies are just funny)

heres what you could do. simply set the stage for how you want to be scared. (you dont have to be chased or killed. like looking at yourself and watching yourself change (mirrors))
then just let it play out. but… indulge yourself in the story.
also on a side note.
try just inducing the feeling of ‘fear’ and see what happens.

p.s not the wanting of fear. but fear.

in LD if you want something. thats all you will get. the wanting of it.
like wanting cool powers. you will simply only get a want for cool powers.
hope this helps.

Maybe if i look in the mirror expecting to get scared, but I associate the dream mirror with laughter. I don’t think I could help myself from expecting something hilarious. Just because it would be all the more funny when I want it to be scary. My mind likes to go for the cynically “typical”. Like I try to get “scared up” as I approach the mirror, expecting to see a monstrous face, but then I think, “what if it’s not scary at all but like a silly cartoon crocodile head like that one time?” And that is ofcourse what I would get. Something silly. I could be wrong though, that would be “typical”. It is a bit like when I try to imagine a vase. It always falls, I have to struggle to keep it just standing there.
Wathing scary movies doesn’t help much since they fail to scare me. I guess I have to go for the “trying to induce fear” technique when I get the chance. I can’t do it IRL, but maybe in dreams.

that’s the problem I had. I got over the fear with experience.

I liked it when I became lucid from a nightmare, but it seems that what you want isn’t an actual nightmare, but to have a “Halloween Experience”, go for it.

I would do this, and try to generally stay aware of your surroundings in the dream. If you notice them starting to shift, or change in any way, focus on them.
