Sleep Paralysis. Weird.

I’m sorry if this in the wrong forum but I couldn’t find an existing thread, there used to be loads, dunno where they are now.

Anyway, when I was first starting out, I, like many, found out about SP and got very scared. However, like most, I needn’t have been. SP is very rare and I didn’t get it at all and I LD’ed 3 times. Since my last time I have stopped trying to LD. Things have happened in my life and I can’t spend as much time doing this, but strangely, since I stopped (about a year ago) I’ve had two weird cases of SP.

One about 4 months back and one just now, which prompted this thread.

The one about 4 months ago I came in and told some people about on the chat, so they may rememember. Basically I was dreaming, and then I was suddenly and vividly aware of being led in my bed. I was bone stiff, couldn’t open my eyes, couldn’t talk and could barely breath. And this is the scary part (and with me having a religious mum, this did scare me for a few minutes): I felt myself getting dragged down, then it got very, very hot. I got dragged through my bed, I still couldn’t move and by this point I could hear horrible noises. Cackles and screams of pain. This still scares me to type this :peek:. Anyway, I thought that I had died somehow and was now going, for some reason, to Hell. I kept getting dragged down and it kept getting hot until the restrictions on my movement were released. This was a very sudden movement and because I had been trying to fight my way back to the ‘surface’ of where I was being dragged down through I flung myself bolt upright and I was sweating and heaving like a madman.

That one lasted about 20 seconds in all, along time to think you’re going to hell and there’s nothing you can do about it.

On to the one I had dismorning now: I fell asleep downstairs on the couch last night, by accident. I was fine until around 8:20 when my Dad had to get my nephew to school and they started arguing about something. This woke me up slightly and then I fell back asleep. Somehow I was able to get a dream into the next 20 mins, because I woke up at around that time. The dream was strange enough, but the SP I was about to have was even more so. The really scary thing about this one is that it was completely realistic and happens everyday, a gas leak - boiler explosion, so was therefore very viable, making it seem more real.

Basically what happened is, I was lying there and I slowly came out of my dream, only to find I couldn’t move or anything (the usual) and I could hear this very loud noise, like a jet engine or something. It got louder and louder and suddenly went up very sharply and just exploded. And I mean exploded, this wasn’t some pansy thing, I actually felt myself get flung all over the place, I hit a few things and then landed. I couldn’t open my eyes yet, or move, but I thought that something had exploded in my house and that I was now lying on the floor, the image in my head was that of my house burning down around me. Just like the last SP, I was very, very hot and I could hear the fire, but just like the last one I could also hear screams of pain, but this time I thought they were my mum’s from her room. I actually tried to call out to her ‘it’s going to be okay, someone will have heard, they’ll get help’ and I wanted really badly to go and comfort her, see she’s okay but I couldn’t move at all, I felt completely broken. Than I just woke up, with a sharp jolt. That lasted about 20 seconds.

Very strange SP’s, I think you’ll agree. If you did read that than thanks, but really I just needed to have it typed out somewhere. Now I got a few questions. 0: Does stopping trying to LD (after you have found out about SP) somehow increases the chances of SP happening? 1: Why the burning and screaming theme? Is this common or is it just me? Why don’t I get ‘Old Hag’ like most others? 2: Isn’t scary how real your brains can make things seem? 3: And has anybody else had experiences like this, or atleast weird SP’s?

If this is in the wrong place can a mod move? Thanks.

Wow! That’s pretty intense… I’ve never had such a Sleep Paralysis experience, it sounds so frightening!
Well, I can at least try to answer the questions, yeah?~

0: Does stopping trying to LD (after you have found out about SP) somehow increases the chances of SP happening?

I don’t really think so-- SP happens everynight before we sleep-- this prevents us from acting out our dreams… Mostly, though, you’re not aware of it… So I don’t think that if you stop trying to LD that it’ll increase your chances.

1: Why the burning and screaming theme? Is this common or is it just me? Why don’t I get ‘Old Hag’ like most others?

So far, I don’t think that this sort of SP experience is common, but then again, it varies from person to person what they get in SP. Some just see lights, others hear sounds and feel things-- you aparently have VERY VERY vivid SP adventures @___a. I don’t think anyone but you could figure out why there is such a theme…

2: Isn’t scary how real your brains can make things seem?

Very! In a lucid one time, I summoned one of my boys… Oh my! ~@____a~ ! He was so realistic, my heart jumped into my throat. XD I think I enjoy the realism, but I can see how very scary it could be…

3: And has anybody else had experiences like this, or atleast weird SP’s?

I have read about very strange, and fun SP experiences  So while I haven’t personally, I can honestly say:
Yes! Others have had weird SPs before…Though I don’t know if they’ve had such burning scary ones…

That sounds so scary  And SP is not caused by lucid dreams but simply occur when you wake up suddenly from a dream (When you’re in the REM stage).

I used to have SP when I was younger.

The story goes:

I would have a repetitive nightmare where a witch would sit outside my grandparents house. She’d place a ball in three trick-or-treat pumpkin candy holders and switch them around then ask me to find the ball. No matter how hard I looked, I could never find it and she’d teleport me another room in the house. There, I’d see a dark, tall, malicious figure approach me and I’d freeze with fear. I’d wake up, couldn’t scream and the figure would almost always be there.

One night, it actually happened where I wasn’t dreaming, I was just in a scary part of the house (basement) and I saw the figure and froze not sleeping.

I think I might of had SP last night. Can sombody tell me?

I was relaxing my muscles, big veacuum cleaner in my head, deep breaths, and all of that. Then, my feet startet to get cold and numb so I stopped and did nothing for a little bit. Later, I did it again and my feet got cold and numb a second time! I started to walk around my house a little bit before going to sleep. My muscles were aching and it felt like I just ran five miles! The thrid time I fell asleep without my feet getting cold or numb

Not SP.

Numbness =/= SP

Lpoolboy:
0. Can’t answer that…

  1. I don’t experience old hag, rather, I always get loud noises. Sometimes I’ll get people talking, sometimes I hear explosions set off right next to my head, sometimes I hear loud whispers. Nothing as intense as what you’ve experienced, though…

  2. YES.

  3. Last night I was falling into SP and heard a faint mosquito noise. The noise amplified, so I thought there were a million mosquitos in the room. Needless to say, I jumped up with a start.

MovieMe (first post): SP can also come while falling asleep.

TNS: You’ll know when you first hit SP. Believe me.

The numbness is NOT SP. People here go like “Ah, I can’t feel my legs anymore… Oh, now I can’t feel my fingers… I must be having SP…”

I never said that numbness is SP. I said that you can also have it when falling asleep.

if the numbness is not SP what is it?

(my right leg was number than left)

Weird. o__O

and also, I was sleeping on my side. But, my left side was on the bottom…I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it.

The nubness is actually done by your mind as you start drifting of to sleep.

Hi and thanks for posting this topic,

It’s a funny coincidence for me. i’ve been looking into split perception experiences while dreaming (i actually posted a topic on it yesterday… see “Split Perception from dreaming”) and i unwittingly abbreviated it to SP, same as sleep paralysis. I’ve had sleep paralysis, and i don’t see that the two are that far off from each other.

i do notice that the split perception experience is never really scary for me, it’s just mindbogglingly strange. as for SP, i’ve had some scary instances, but i’ve learned to relax and just let it happen. since i’ve been doing that, i’ve actually had more split perception experiences (being consciously aware of my body’s surroundings and dream experiences at the same time) and the ability to move my body or talk while dreaming has increased too. it’s strange man, but i always wake up feeling really good.

here’s my take on how to overcome and even take advantage of the SP phenomenon: RELAX. your mind can be your best friend or your worst enemy. since i started looking at the experience with SP in light of something i could learn from and have fun with, not as problem, it’s evolved into something of a pleasant mystery. there are aspects of it i will probably never understand, but there are things that i can do now that i never thought were possible.

you also may want to consider practicing some kind of body awareness exercise, like yoga or step by step muscle relaxation. Ninja Spudsta mentioned his technique briefly above. all these heighten and calm your awareness while easing the body’s fear reflex tendencies.

hey, hope that helps and have fun exploring this wild universe!

-eyes gonna sleep good now suh!

Thanks for reading my thread guys. I like reading your responses, no matter what they are.

To Kindergarten - I must admit that when everything’s said and done I’m glad to have had these experiences, not only is it cool to experience the power of the brain first-hand, but it made my day a little more interesting.

The reason I sound so negative in my opening post is because that was around 40 minutes after this had happened, and as you may imagine I was a bit shaken.

I still can’t get over the feeling of that explosion though. The way I could feel myself get flung about like a ragdoll and how I can still remember exactly where on my body I flew into things. I got hit once on my right hip, once on my left upper arm and then landed very roughly on my back. I thought I had broken my spinal cord, which is why I couldn’t move. Felt so damn real.

As I said before, this is very good to get out though, not only does it make sense to document these things, so that we can all learn from them, but it’s good therapy also.

So if any of you have had any SP Experiences at all, tell us about them. Oh and White Galactic Wizard, that sounds very scary. :meh:

hey loops,

great attitude! i can definitely learn from that. even in the light of real life trauma. thanks!
