So.. failure to dream.

So i havent had jack squat for a dream, i know my dream recalls terrible, Ive been taking melatonin just about every other day, my question is, with school as it is i get about 6 hours of sleep. generally is it even possible to have dreamt in that short time span? Sadly i cannot get to sleep before 11:30 most nights due to work, and then i wake around 6:30, so its very frustrating, i dont think ive had a morning where ive woken up and remembered anything in a long time. anyone have any ideas of something i could do?

I was going to think of something to say, but sadly, I have no tips for you.
I do go through similar things as you, but I have excellent dream recall. It just differs from person to person, I guess…

I know what you mean, im at a loss for words… i mean i hardly sleep enough during the week and then on weekends when i do, i dont remember anything anyway… i really need to find some way to start remembering but its not helping…

Once I did an experiment: I went sleep at normal hour but I set my alarm clock for 2 hours of sleep. I wanted to know if I will remember any dream while sleeping only 2 hours. According to theory, sleep cycle lasts about 1.5 h and then we enter REM cycle, so we are dreaming. I wanted to make sure I wake up after REM, not before thats why I decided to set alarm for 2 hours. When my alarm woke me I could easily remember dream, and I instantly wrote it. Conclusion: sleeping only 6 hours or so should be enough to remember 2 or 3 dreams. If you can’t remember them, well maybe it means your dream recall is still weak and you must practise more.

I usually have decent reacall, but on weekdays when I sleep around 6 hours I usually remember nothing. If I’m lucky, 1 or 2 small ones. but it is possible. It might need some practice though

I find drinking tea before bed helps- but no idea if this works for everyone.

How long you sleep it is not so important as WHEN you sleep. You have to find a way to sleep somewhere between 10pm and 12pm, during this two hours people usually have intense dream and an intense dream should be easier to remember.
PS: Too bad in my case nothing really works

DreamUnderhood- where did you read that? All the stuff I’ve read and experienced basically is that the long dreams come during the final hours of sleep as the REM patterns get longer. Yes it’s best if you go to bed during that time I agree with that part. However if I wake up at around 3 am- which I do, usually by alarm and more recently by mnemonic induction, all I get are a few vague short fragments if anything at all.

The only thing I can say, is that in 6 hours, you have many REM periods, but most people with poor recall only remember a dream if they wake up during one unfortunately… the may rarely experience the end.

Now, REM periods increase in frequency as you sleep more and more, so in 8 hours, your more likely to wake up during a dream. If you really want to remember a dream, you could wake up earlier, but with such little sleep, bad idea.

I read somewhere your first REM period is short, and around the 90 minute mark, then longer and around the hour mark, and then longer and around the 50 minute mark and so on. Not quite sure, though.
