So last night...

Last night, I tried the WILD method for the first time. Also, this was the first time I had attempted LD. About 15 minutes in (guessing the time), I was using the counting method and I had gotten to like “350, I am dreaming”. All of a sudden, my both of my arms flew up a few inches and back down before I could do anything. I don’t know if my arms physically or it was just my brain mentally checking if I was awake or not. But every few minutes, my body would slowly begin to shake/rock. It was uncontrollable and no matter what happened, I kept my eyes closed, body relaxed, and counted without any movement. After a while, my right foot moved to the right, then back to the left just like my arms. I couldn’t tell if it was physical or not. I kept finding myself thinking about random thoughts and almost being there as if it was a dream, then coming back to my senses and realizing I had forgotten to count. There was a plane outside which completely distracted me and I looked up and saw that 30 minutes had gone by exactly. Could someone tell me if I’m doing this correctly and I just need to go a little farther or should I change my methods?

I think that those jerks you are experiencing are similar to the ones you can experience when meditating (after all the exercise is pretty identical). the jolts/jerks are called kriyas. They will go away after your body gets used to having your awareness leave your body. i.e going into a dream or attaining a relaxed or higher level during meditation.

That’s exactly how I would describe it. A jerk. And it was so sudden and fast. Is it normal?

Jerks and such are totally normal, it’s just the body releasing stress. It happens a lot when you do mediation/are in deep sleep/ or do sensory dep tanks. I’ll try to find some links or something.

So was I in the right frame of mind if those jerks were happening? Am I on my way to achieving LD?

You’re not on the way to a dream, you’re on the way to sleep paralysis. SP, on the other hand, gives you the ability to step into a dream. So yes, those jolts can be a good sign, but they are avoidable. If you’re not already doing so, you should set an alarm for 5 1/2 hours after going to bed. Attempting WILD at that time will be much easier, and your body won’t give you as many fits.

Edit: Oh, and welcome to LD4all :content:

i had a similar experience last time i tried WILD… i felt like my knee kept slipping toward the edge of the bed suddenly (this happened at least 3 times). all i could think was “crap! my WILD is ruined now…” but i kept with it because i didn’t know if it was real, or if it was the “sinking through the bed” feeling. i’ve never had this feeling… i usually get intense vibration and auditory hallucination.
From my experience, i would say that you were definately on your way, close to SP. Once you get to SP, entering the dream should be fairly easy. you just have to trust that you will know when it’s time. the rocking you described sounds strange, but it sounds more likely to be hallucination rather than a physical rocking. if your body were moving that much, it would have noticeably made a negative effect on your attempt.
