Social Sciences!

Is anybody here taking social sciences in college?
Because i’d like to know what to expect. General feedback would be great, thanks!

expect ?

expect the unexpected!

expect it to be over in a blur

expect it to last a long time

expect it to be exciting

expect it to be what you do
and expect it to not

whatever it is that carries you through your world, is what your experience of studying it shall be

is it exciting ? do you love to study ? do you love social sciences?

expect to be stimulated and engaged!

expect to have great discussions.

expect the unexpected, lol.

i studied psychology.

I’ll be doing Psychology and Sociology next school year!

It should be great…

I haven’t gone to Social Sciences itself, but I’m majoring in something they call Fine Letters, which is a bit of a Social Sciences, Philosophy and Literature mash-up (often quipped: “give me a bit of everything”). If you’re anything like me, you’ll love Anthropology and dread Political Science (for a more positive look on Political Science, look for Amused Himself To Death — he’s currently away, but if you send him a PM he’ll probably reply as soon as he’s back).

It really depends on your school whether your course will be more field work or theory, whether it’ll have a particular political bias (marxist, liberal, post-modern) or show you a bit of everything and let you decide for yourself — really! it depends a bloody lot on your school. Anthropology, like I said, can’t go bad. Doesn’t matter if they focus on training you as a field ethnographer or as an academic anthropologist (or as something in-between, an ethnologist for instance — although I have to be frank with you: I have no idea what an ethnologist does!), taking a couple of Anthropology courses and minors rocks.

If they don’t require that you take Psychology and Philosophy, take them anyway. Believe me: very important. But delay your Philosophy course as much as you can: the more you know of other things beforehand, the better. Try to balance your minors, a bit of Anthropology, a bit of Sociology, a bit of Economics if they offer it, and yes, even Political Science has its use. Even if you make a decision very soon about your preferences (“I want to be a Sociologist and nothing more!”), make sure you know enough from all fields — your résumé will be spotless.

Other than that, I have not much to say, as I’m not a Social Sciences major myself, just happen to have some minors & courses in common with them. But really. You’ll have a great time. Only downside is the reading load. It’s usually way moer than you can actually read, so you’ll need to make choices and you will lose a couple of weekends a month nevertheless. But it’s well worth it, if that’s what you like. A great major to have, I say.

I took some political science and history at uni last year. Man, I loved every second of it…then again I am a geek that way :content:

And it just happens to work out that I’ll get to take lots more history and poli sci in the years to come, which is awesome.

Thanks for your replies everyone, i was worried it wouldn’t be that fun because there were like 20 people at the orientation for my group
