What do you think we should be exploring, Space or The ocean? I believe we should be exploring the ocean, because it’s on our planet. Really, why should we be looking for other planets and exploring them, when we haven’t even finished exploring earth.
i was hoping this would be a LD question
well, Dream or reality, Space is more, but i do enjoy the sea more then the sky.
but on the other hand, i don’t think we should “finish exploring earth” first.
Because we already explored way too much, there’s nothing left that’s really cool or amazing left that we haven’t already seen. in Outer Space, on the other hand, there is.
Space, definitely. It contains literally an infinite amount of wonders and resources. I believe it is crucial to our survival. If we screw the earth up, humanity needs somewhere else to live. We’ve seen many wonders of the sea, but so little of the beauty of the cosmos.
I would have to say space. The possibilites that await us out there are far greater than what(probably) lies under the sea. In space are answers to questions like “Where did we come from?”, and “Are we alone?” The mysteries of time, space, and alternate universes are held in black holes. There is so much to discover out there, and I think much of what is discovered will change the spirituality of Earth for the better.
I would say that until we sort out the problems of poverty and disease throughout the world we should be spending our resources on solving these problems rather than exploring.
When ten million people die of poverty every year (ok, I don’t know the exact figure, but it’s in that order of magnitude) how can we spend billions on rockets?
But when we sort out those problems, I would say…space.
Because we’re narcissistic people
And why are we narsisstic people? And can’t that be dealt with?
What Dreamer saidis really something. Why say we need to pick either one, ocean or space? Poverty is truly a big problem.
On the other hand, another projectthat wouldgo earlier than ocean nor space in my mind would be to get fewer. We are too many bloody people in this world!
That’s true, Yay for medicines keeping us alive longer than we deserve to live!
i think it would be more interesting to search the sea and see what new and old creatures we could find and maybe what type of cures and new foods could come from those creatures.
Well, it really is easy to be pessimistic about poverty and such, because so much foreign aid has been sent to Africa and other poor areas, about three trillion, and most of it winds up in some tyrants bank account. I agree with you that more must be done, but honestly, what can be done? If someone like the US goes into a poor country, overthrows the tyrants, and installs a dictator or something, would you honestly support the US? No other country in the world has the testicular fortitude to invade another country. The EU is filled with pacifists and wimps, thus meaning that the US would be the only nation possible to do something like this. Subsequently, world opinion of the US would drop even further, etc etc. Since money only supports the tyrants, and since military options would only garner crap and abuse from the world politically, the question should be, why should the US do anything to help the poor?
ahem I say explore space, if only as a means of escapism.
Petter - thanks for the support
Ok, to start with. Quite a few of those tyrants you speak of were put in place by the US in the first place. Saddam Hussein used to be the friend of the US, in fact I believe it was the US that gave him the weapons which he used against Kuwait. There have been many democratic regimes (especially in Latin America) that have been invaded by the US and replaced with dictators.
In venezuela there is a huge gap between the rich and poor. I don’t agree with some of the things that Hugo Chavez has said (like how he likes Mugabe) but I very much agree with lots of the things he has done (though not all, I don’t like the rule by decree) since being president. He has nationalised the country’s oil, and used it to pay for health care and to fight poverty in venezuela. In 2002 there was a coup against him, which was backed by the US governemnt.
So, as military interventions go, I think the reason the US is unpopular is that a great many of them were immoral, and have created a lot of poverty.
However, if the US was to do something to stop the killing in Darfur I would support them. I wouldn’t call the EU pacisifistic or wimpish, just tired of invasions. There have been military interventions by member countries in recent years which have worked.
But going back to what to do about poverty, I would give the aid money to charities. For example, a charity I often give to is World Vision. There are 40 million people in the world who are blind with cataracts and who can’t afford an operation. It costs £5 ($10) for an operation. So a sum of 200 million pounds could give 40 million people their sight. There are charities that will provide livestock, training in agriculture or other things, fruit trees, medicinal plants e.t.c.
Vaccination is provided through charities, but there isn’t enough money behind it. There is so much that could be done by charities if they had money behind them.
Morals dear boy, morals
[EDIT] Sorry if this seems off-topic, but I believe that it’s very relevant. I love exploration and learning about oceans, space and the universe, but I think that our attitudes about it need to change. The most important thing should be ending suffering, exploration can come afterwards. [/EDIT]
Well, space is the final frontier. The sea is a cruel mistress. So, I choose space. I dislike cruel mistresses.
i would like to explore the seas for more fish possibly avaliable for sashimi and cooking. also poverty could be fought within our nation(U.S.A.) by not out sourcing our jobs to foriegn nations. by building up poorer parts of the country and that is one way. to do it.
We should at least explore 100% of our planet before looking at others.
Well, I’m not sure what we could find in the ocean, but is there anything that will be crucially important to the human race? I mean, we may find some novel species of fish, a trench or two, but nothing totally unexpected. (Right? I’m not at all knowledgeable).
In the we’re going to be overpopulated, choking in our own gas - someday, people are going to need to get out of here if we want to survive. Also, space, at least to me, is more interesting. There’s an incredible number of things that we don’t know about space. Intelligent life, upcoming dangers to our planet or solar system… My very special dream is to one day go into space, as an astronaut or not.
But I do agree with the point that we need to sort ourselves out at the same time. If all of these problems on Earth aren’t solved soon, we may not have time to get ourselves off the planet.
I’m undecided between the two…as I understand it we actually know less about the bottom of the sea than we do about space, so the sea would certainly be worth exploring since we still stand to learn so much. On the other hand space exploration has helped us advance satellite technology and other useful things which have served us well, so that’s worth exploring more as well…but like Dreamer said, we have more important things to worry about before we go exploring too far.
