What are your thoughts on Sylvia Browne? I’ve listened to several of her lectures and I watch her on Montel She’s a very interesting speaker. I’ve listened to all of her ‘Life on the Other Side’ books.
So, what are you thoughts on her? Do you think she is a fraud? She has been wrong before, in the case of the Virginia miners, but she’s been right numerous times too.
She accepted the task of doing the James Randi test, but I haven’t heard anything else of it.
Let me tell you a story about an encounter that one of my close friends had with Sylvia Browne. Sylvia went to a place which I will not reveal, that is said to be haunted. My friend told me that Sylvia’s people told her to agree with everything Sylvia asked her even if it wasn’t true. Yes, she’s a major fraud.
I, sad to say, used to believe. Then I found a great site called stopsylviabrowne.org (or .com, I can’t remember) and I realized she’s the biggest fraud, the one that caught me was the interview with one of her ex-husbands. You should check it out.
Thank’s for that link. Here’s a pretty interesting clip of hers from the Montel show, it analyzes her correct predictions and her incorrect ones later on in the page.
From what I read, she is not only a fraud, but an idiot. If only Houdini was around, he would also falsify her.
EDIT: From what I read, she is money hungry, attention grabbing, and downright evil. She misleads loving families into wasted time searching. She has not gotten a single case right. Why she is still on, I do not know. Remove her from her ill-founded religon, her money. She is a parasite.
I was supprised to see someone was questioning whether or not she was a fraud, I thought it was widely accepted that she was .
If I started to try and predict the outcomes of various events like she does, I would get the same results. There are really only 2 choices in most of what she does. Will the miners get out, or will they die? Will (insert child’s name here) be found? Or not? Try it. Every time you hear about something like that, make a prediction, then follow up on it. I’m sure you’ll have a sucess rate close to Browne’s.
Having read the link about the missing child one, she did more than just guess yes or no. She described the kidnapper, wrongly, but tried.
But you really can’t take that on it’s own. To really judge her success rate you need to look at everything she has done and look at all the data.
The more you say (as a fraud) the more likely you will be wrong, it’s really hard to tell from just one example. Even a real psychic has to interpret information given and that can be misunderstood.
Many fakes will tell you want they think is best for you, when was the last time the a palm reader told you that you’ll be killed with in the week by a car accident?
Still, there’s lots of money hungry fakes out there and sadly there is more fakes than real psychics. It’s highly possible that she has talked herself into believing she is, regardless of whether it’s true.
I used to believe psychic powers might be real, but I was still somewhat skeptical. It was when I started reading about the claims of people like Browne that I started seriously doubting that this stuff was real…and it’s not real. What Sylvia does is a magic (not magick ) trick called cold reading, which is basically fishing for information and the using what little bits of info the subject releases to make it appear that you have some sort of supernatural insight which allows you to know things you shouldn’t. In reality, the subject is the one telling the reader everything.
I haven’t read any of her books but I’m seeing someone who’s a big fan of her…I’m not looking forward to the day when she asks me if I believe in psychics
Oh and lastly, she has accepted Randi’s test, but hasn’t contacted Randi or the JREF since she accepted the challenge, and that was a few years ago now.
There are people who are clairvoyant/audient, but 99% of all TV “psychics” are just frauds or cold readers. But that doesn’t mean clairvoyancy doesn’t exist. (I don’t like the word “pyschics” when referring to real abilities. The word is too hollywood)
I think many people who claim to have OBE’s through the dream state are just having LDs of having OBE’s. But that doesn’t mean real OBE’s don’t exist.
I agree, but it makes me wonder why I’ve never met a real psychic, or why every psychic I’ve ever seen on TV or elsewhere has never been able to prove that they can really do what they claim. In the absence of any psychic who was been able to prove to do what they claim they can do, I just don’t think there’s any reason to believe in such things.
Besides, there is not only the $1 million paranormal challenge that the JREF offers, but many other similar prizes around the world. If there is a real psychic out there, just one real psychic, why not win that money and do something good with it? Think about it, not only would that be a million bucks for you or your favorite charity, but we would finally be able to scientifically examine something that could revolutionize our understanding of the universe. If I were a psychic, I wouldn’t hesitate at a chance like this.
Being psychic is no different to religion. For every person that gives what they consider evidence to the existence of God, someone else can debunk it. There truly is no way to prove it 100%. That is why these challenges exist.
Pretty much everything a psychic can do someone will find a way to debunk it. Find an item in a building, oh they were told and knew before hand. Tell them something about a deceased love one, oh they were just “cold reading”.
Guess the next X amount of cards, oh it was luck/coincidence. Chances are you have met a real psychic at some point, but why would they tell you? Do you go out and tell people you meet random things about yourself?
Who knows why the real psychics don’t come forward, perhaps they are content with their lives and don’t want it ruined by media attention (which would happen if they could prove with out doubt they are psychic) I can vouch for that, I wouldn’t want the attention either. I am a very private person, but then I am not psychic so no problems there
Who knows why they don’t, maybe it’s the left over mentality when such things were persecuted and in some cases it still is. I have met a few people who have the notion that any type of “supernatural” ability is the work of the Devil and an affront to their God. I could just imagine the uproar from these people if anyone ever did publicly take these challenges and succeeded.
That’s because that’s what these people do, and when an opportunity to work cooperatively with an organization that will test their abilities, they refuse. Why?
Perhaps, but it stands to reason that at least ONE real psychic would come forward and prove themselves. Since that hasn’t happened, what reason have we to believe in such things?
Well, I have experienced too many things in my life to not believe that anything is possible. I haven’t personally experienced a psychic experience, but I have experienced many other things.
I think that there might be people in the world who are psychic, but Sylvia isn’t one of them. No, I’ve never seen a psychic person, but think of things like ghosts and UFO’s. Many people never encounter these things in their lives, but there are still hundreds, if not thousands of eyewittness accounts. Just because we have never physically seen something doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t at least consider the possibility of it’s existance.
