The Lyrics Thread-Part IV

I think this song sort of has to do with Lucid Dreaming. The song is by They Might Be Giants, and most of their songs don’t make sense, so who knows what this is really about.

The song is about Dream Signs…I think…or about not sleeping…or something…The song is sorta random…like all of their other songs…but, I like random…

Am I Awake?

By: They Might Be Giants

Am I awake?
What time is it?
When I get through this day
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?

The coffee’s cold, did I forget to drink it yet?
Did I forget?
My clothes are wet I don’t remember drinking it

When I get through this part
Will the next one be the same?
Will I be wondering
If I’m awake?

These are not the clothes I had on when I went to bed
And something else besides my hair is growing from my head
And when I close my eyes it looks the same as when I open them again

Am I awake?

What time is it?

Is it that time again?
Wasn’t it already then?
So does it have to be
The time it was again?

When I get through the day
Can’t someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?

Am I awake?

When I get through this day
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?

When I get through this day
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?

“Stolen Car”, Bruce Springsteen, The River (Disc 2)

I met a little girl and I settled down
In a little house out on the edge of town
We got married, and swore we’d never part
Then little by little we drifted from each other’s heart

At first I thought it was just restlessness
That would fade as time went by and our love grew deep
In the end it was something more I guess
That tore us apart and made us weep

And I’m driving a stolen car
Down on Eldridge Avenue
Each night I wait to get caught
But I never do

She asked if I remembered the letters I wrote
When our love was young and bold
She said last night she read those letters
And they made her feel one hundred years old

And I’m driving a stolen car
On a pitch black night
And I’m telling myself I’m gonna be alright
But I ride by night and I travel in fear

Who am I? from Les Miserables

He thinks that man is me
He knew him at a glance!
That stranger he has found
This man could be my chance!

Why should I save his hide?
Why should I right this wrong
When I have come so far
And struggled for so long?

If I speak, I am condemned.
If I stay silent, I am damned!

I am the master of hundreds of workers.
They all look to me.
How can I abandon them?
How would they live
If I am not free?

If I speak, I am condemned.
If I stay silent, I am damned!

Who am I?
Can I condemn this man to slavery
Pretend I do not feel his agony
This innocent who bears my face
Who goes to judgement in my place
Who am I?
Can I conceal myself for evermore?
Pretend I’m not the man I was before?
And must my name until I die
Be no more than an alibi?
Must I lie?
How can I ever face my fellow men?
How can I ever face myself again?
My soul belongs to God, I know
I made that bargain long ago
He gave me hope when hope was gone
He gave me strength to journey on

Who am I? Who am I?
I am Jean Valjean!

And so Javert, you see it’s true
That man bears no more guilt than you!
Who am I?
24601!

Tool-Lateralus
Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
Lets me see.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
Lets me see there is so much more and
Beckons me to look thru to these infinite possibilities.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind.
Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

I embrace my desire to
I embrace my desire to
Feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow
To feel inspired to fathom the power, to witness the beauty,
To bathe in the fountain,
To swing on the spiral
To swing on the spiral
To swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I move myeslf between the sounds and open wide to
Suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
Im reaching up and reaching out. Im reaching for the random or what ever will
Bewilder me.
What ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no ones been.
Well ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no ones been.
Spiral out. keep going.
Spiral out. keep going.
Spiral out. keep going.
Spiral out. keep going.
Spiral out. keep going.

Captain Beefheart
Pappy with the Khaki sweatband
Bowed goat potbellied barnyard that only he noticed
The old fart was smart
The old gold cloth madonna
Dancin’ t’ the fiddle 'n saw
He ran down behind the knoll
‘n slipped on his wooden fishhead
The mouth worked ‘n snapped all the bees
Back t’ the bungalow
Momma was flatten’n lard
With her red enamel rollin’ pin
When the fishhead broke the window
Rubber eye erect 'n precisely detailed
Airholes from which breath should come
Is now closely fit
With the chatter of the old fart inside
An assortment of observations took place
Momma licked 'er lips like uh cat
Pecked the ground like uh rooster
Pivoted like uh duck
Her stockings down caught dust 'n doughballs
She cracked 'er mouth glaze caught one eyelash
Rubbed 'er hands on ‘er gorgeous gingham
Her hand grasped sticky metal intricate latchwork
Open t’ the room uh smell cold mixed with bologna
Rubber bands crumpled wax paper bonnets
Fat goose legs ‘n special jellies
Ignited by the warmth of the room
The old fart smelled this thru his important breather holes
Cleverly he dialed from within from the outside we observed
That the nose of the wooden mask
Where the holes had just been uh moment ago
Was now smooth amazingly blended camouflaged in
With the very intricate rainbow trout replica
The old fart inside was now breathin’ freely
From his perfume bottle atomizer air bulb invention
His excited eyes from within the dark interior glazed;
watered in appreciation of his thoughtful preparation.

Doors (a part of) Celebration of the Lizard King
Once I had, a little game
I liked to crawl, back in my brain
I think you know, the game I mean
I mean the game, called ‘go insane’

you should try, this little game
Just close your eyes, forget your name
Forget the world, forget the people
And we’ll erect, a different steeple

This little game, is fun to do
Just close your eyes, no way to lose
And I’m right there, I’m going too
Release control, we’re breaking thru

Way back deep into the brain
Back where there’s never any pain
And the rain falls gently on the town
And over the heads of all of us
And in the labyrinth of streams
Beneath, the quiet unearthly presence of
gentle hill dwellers, in the gentle hills around
Reptiles abounding
Fossils, caves, cool air heights

Rachel Luttrell - Beyond The Night (Written by Joel Goldsmith)
(Stargate Atlantis fans should remember this)

Beyond the night, a rising sun
Beyond the night, the battle’s won
The battle is won.

Fear and shame now in the past
Pain and sorrow gone at last
Gone at last.

Circle renewed, peace will be found
Beyond the night, on sacred ground.

River flows, lead by the wind
First new breath her journey begins
Her journey begins

“Casey” Darren Hayes

Driving in your car
With the windows down
And the beat up stereo
Struggle with this town
Cuz you love to hate it
And hate it to let it go

And we’re all alone
And so tired of being
Underrated
So don’t take me home
Cuz I feel alive
When you come and save me

A yellow car
Speeding down the Southside freeway
We’ll rewrite this movie
Make it end like we want it to

And Casey
When you go
Can you come and find me
Wanna be beside you
When you leave this town
I’ve been waving goodbye
Pretending not to cry
I want to be someone
If you take me away
All the pain will change
Into a memory…
Of when we were amazing

1989
Summer had hit
But it was not moving
What is it with this town?
Every time we win
It just feels like losing
We were never gonna fit in
I was a mixed up kid
And you were my sanity

In a yellow car
We don’t even have to go far
Cuz that song you’re playing
Sounds like peace on the radio

And Casey
When you go
Can you come and find me
Wanna be beside you
When you leave this town
I’ve been waving goodbye
Pretending not to cry
I want to be someone
If you take me away
All the pain will change
Into a memory
Of when we were amazing
When we were amazing

I know things will change
Casey stay the same
Take me away
Oh, we don’t have to go far
Yeah, we don’t have to go far
I know

Casey
When you go
Can you come and find me
Wanna be beside you
When you leave this town
I’ve been waving goodbye
Pretending not to cry
I want to be someone
If you take me away
All the pain will change
Into a memory
Of when we were
When we were

Casey
When you go
Can you come and find me
Wanna be beside you
When you leave this town
I’ve been waving goodbye
Pretending not to cry
I want to be someone
If you take me away
All the pain will change
Into a memory
Of when we were amazing
When we were

Driving in your car
With the windows down
And the beat up stereo
Oh, oh

I wanna
I’m gonna
I wanna
Be someone
I wanna
I’m gonna
I wanna
Be someone

(I will run to you
I will come to you
I will run to you
I will come to you)

Come on and get me
Come on and rescue me

(I will run to you
I will come to you
I will run to you
I will come to you)

Coming through the sky
Like a satellite
Like a radio wave
A meteorite

House of the rising sun, The Animals

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I’m one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new bluejeans
My father was a gamblin’ man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he’s satisfied
Is when he’s on a drunk

------ organ solo ------

Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I’m goin’ back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I’m one

Where The Wild Roses Grow
by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds with Kylie Minogue

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one
As she stared at my eyes and smiled
For her lips were the colour of the roses
That grew down the river, all bloody and wild

When he knocked on my door and entered the room
My trembling subsided in his sure embrace
He would be my first man, and with a careful hand
He wiped at the tears that ran down my face

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

On the second day I brought her a flower
She was more beautiful than any woman I’d seen
I said, “Do you know where the wild roses grow
So sweet and scarlet and free?”

On the second day he came with a single red rose
He said: “Will you give me your loss and your sorrow?”
I nodded my head, as I lay on the bed
“If I show you the roses will you follow?”

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

On the third day he took me to the river
He showed me the roses and we kissed
And the last thing I heard was a muttered word
As he knelt above me with a rock in his fist

On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow
And she lay on the bank, the wind lied as a thief
As I kissed her goodbye, I said, “All beauty must die”
And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

Human Fly
Nouvelle Vague in Bande à Part [Samba/Bossa Nova]

I’m a human fly, I spell it F L Y,
I say, buzz, buzz, buzz, and it’s just because
I’m a human fly and I don’t know why
I got ninety six tears, in ninety six eyes

I got a garbage brain, it’s drivin’ me insane
And I don’t like it so I push that pesticide
And baby I don’t care 'cause baby, I don’t scare
'Cause I’m a reborn maggot using germ warfare

Rockin’ right

I’m a human fly, and I don’t know why,
I say, buzz, buzz, buzz, and it’s just because
I’m a unzipped fly, I don’t know why
And I don’t know but I say buzz

I’m a human fly, I spell F L Y,
I say, buzz, buzz, buzz, and it’s just because
I’m a human fly and I don’t know why
I got

Béla Lugosi’s Dead
Nouvelle Vague in Bande à Part [Rock/Gothic+Samba/Bossa Nova]

White on white translucent black capes
Back on the rack

Béla Lugosi’s dead
The bats have left the bell tower
The victims have been bled
Red velvet lines, the black box

Béla Lugosi’s dead
Béla Lugosi’s dead
Undead, undead, undead
Undead, undead, undead

The virginal brides file past his tomb
Strewn with time’s dead flowers
Bereft in deathly bloom
Alone in a darkened room, the count

Béla Lugosi’s dead
Béla Lugosi’s dead
Undead, undead, undead

Undead, undead, undead, undead, undead
Undead, undead, undead, undead, undead

In The Back Seat
Arcade Fire

I like the peace
in the backseat,
I don’t have to drive,
I don’t have to speak,
I can watch the country side,
and I can fall asleep.

My family tree’s
losing all its leaves,
crashing towards the driver’s seat,
the lightning bolt made enough heat
to melt the street beneath your feet.

Alice died
in the night,
I’ve been learning to drive.
My whole life,
I’ve been learning.

I like the peace
in the backseat,
I don’t have to drive,
I don’t have to speak,
I can watch the country side

Alice died
in the night,
I’ve been learning to drive.
My whole life,

We Are
by Ana Johnsson

See the devil on the doorstep now my oh my
Telling everybody, oh, just how to live their lives
Sliding down the information highway
Buying in just like a bunch of fools
Time is ticking and we can’t go back my oh my

What about the world today
What about the place that we call home
We’ve never been so many
And we’ve never been so alone

Keep watching from your picket fence
You keep talking but it makes no sense
You say we’re not responsible
But we are, we are
You wash your hands, you come out clean
Fail to recognize the enemies within
You say we’re not responsible
But we are, we are, we are

One step forward making two steps back my oh my
Riding piggy on the bad boys back for life
Lining up for the grand illusion
No answers for no questions asked
Lining up for the execution
Without knowing why

Keep watching from your picket fence
You keep talking but it makes no sense
You say we’re not responsible
But we are, we are
You wash your hands, you come out clean
Fail to recognize the enemies within
You say we’re not responsible
But we are, we are, we are

It’s all about power by taking control
Breaking the will
And breaking the soul
They suck us dry till there’s nothing left
My oh my, my oh my

What about the world today
What about the place that we call home
We’ve never been so many
Yet we’ve never been so alone… so alone

Keep watching from your picket fence
You keep talking but it makes no sense
You say we’re not responsible
But we are, we are
You wash your hands, you come out clean
Fail to recognize the enemies within
You say we’re not responsible
But we are, we are, we are

It’s all about power by taking control we are
Breaking the rule we are, we are
And breaking the soul we are
They suck us dry till there’s nothing left we are, we are
My oh my, my oh my

We are It’s all
We are
We are
We are, we are by taking control
We are It’s all
We are
It’s all about power
By taking control

Correction! The song is a folk song, that has been sung by an abundant amount of artists, including Bob Dylan. Interestingly, the Animals changed one small part of the song, other than electrifying it, The Animals put:

And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I’m one

…whereas the original read:

And it’s been the ruin of many a poor girl
And God I know I’m one

I think the song makes a lot more sense with the classic version, in my opinion. Like, it would be easier for a girl to be ruined by sex (I think the song is about a brothel in New Orleans), because women can get pregnant, and stuck with a kid for the rest of their lives. Plus, the fact that women can be pushed around my men a lot easier.

hahaha, great song. How do you like the album so far

Johnny 99, Bruce Springsteen, from the album Nebraska

Well they closed down the auto plant in Mahwah late that month
Ralph went out lookin’ for a job but he couldn’t find none
He came home too drunk from mixin’ Tanqueray and wine
He got a gun shot a night clerk now they call’m Johnny 99

Down in the part of town where when you hit a red light you don’t stop
Johnny’s wavin’ his gun around and threatenin’ to blow his top
When an off duty cop snuck up on him from behind
Out in front of the Club Tip Top they slapped the cuffs on Johnny 99

Well the city supplied a public defender but the judge was Mean John Brown
He came into the courtroom and stared young Johnny down
Well the evidence is clear gonna let the sentence son fit the crime
Prison for 98 and a year and we’ll call it even Johnny 99

A fistfight broke out in the courtroom they had to drag Johnny’s girl away
His mama stood up and shouted “Judge don’t take my boy this way”
Well son you got a statement you’d like to make
Before the bailiff comes to forever take you away

Now judge judge I had debts no honest man could pay
The bank was holdin’ my mortgage and they was takin’ my house away
Now I ain’t sayin’ that makes me an innocent man
But it was more 'n all this that put that gun in my hand

Well your honor I do believe I’d be better off dead
And if you can take a man’s life for the thoughts that’s in his head
Then won’t you sit back in that chair and think it over judge one more time
And let 'em shave off my hair and put me on that execution line

Dance With Me
Nouvelle Vague, in their début album Nouvelle Vague [Samba/Bossa Nova]

Let’s dance little stranger
Show me secret sins
Love can be like bondage
Seduce me once again

Burning like an angel
Who has heaven in reprieve
Burning like the voodoo man
With devils on his sleeve

Won’t you dance with me
In my world of fantasy
Won’t you dance with me
Ritual fertility

Like an apparition
You don’t seem real at all
Like a premonition
Of curses on my soul

The way I want to love you
Well it could be against the law
I’ve seen you in a thousand minds
You’ve made the angels fall

Won’t you dance with me
In my world of fantasy
Won’t you dance with me
Ritual fertility

Come on little stranger
There’s only one last dance
Soon the music’s over
Let’s give it one more chance

Won’t you dance with me
In my world of fantasy
Won’t you dance with me
Ritual fertility

Take a chance with me
In my world of fantasy
Won’t you dance with me
Ritual fertility

is the original by Bahaus, and this is a cover, or vice versa?

You’re right, this song is originally by Bauhaus.

Nouvelle Vague (a name which means “new wave”) is a French group which gets English new wave music (in this case gothic rock, but bear with me) and plays it in bossa nova style (bossa nova also means “new wave”). The performers are supposed to never have heard the original version, so their performances are always very different from the original version.

that last line of the song wakes remeberances of old earth rituals … was that the musicians intention or was it juast for the ryme ?

i love this song!

thanks
