the "old hag."

hey,
i really want to lucid dream, i am starting the excercises (you got me looking at my hands every five minutes asking "am i dreaming? which is good. ) but i don’t want to lucid dream for one reason: yep, you got it. the old hag. i saw a TV show called nightmares from hell, or something, and one of them had a reconstruction of sleep paralysis and the “old hag.” it looked very creepy, a tall old bony looking woman draped in black robes and a hood was coming up to her and climbing on to her. apparantly she is meant to strangle the victim when on top of them. the woman couldn’t breathe, and it was clearly shown in the reconstruction. this has put me off of it, but i would really like to find a way around it. any ideas?
(i don’t want to end up like this whne i first LD:  )

First of all, welcome to LD4all!

Don’t fear it for starters; the more you fear it - I don’t mean to scare you or anything - but higher the chance that it’ll happen. Just don’t think about it. I’ve tried to LD for about 2 months now, and I’ve never had the old hag. Anyway, if it ever does happen, and it can be terrifying, but it’s just all in your head. You can’t get killed by it or anything. It’s completely safe.

And that was just a reconstruction. That only happens in the dreamworld, not in real life. Also, they make it look scarier on purpose to attract horror fans to watch their TV show.

It’s also interesting to know that the old hag isn’t always an old hag. Some people have seen cats, the paparazzi, and even dancing teddy bears, seriously!

Just don’t let it hassle you, and it won’t come. Simple.

ah, thank you for that, neko.
yeah, i realised that the more i think about it, the higher the chance is that it will come. that was quite some reassurance you have given to me!
thanks again.

You’re welcome Ryno5660. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

yeah…how do i ask myself if i’m dreaming if i can’t control what goes on until i am lucid? i am a bit confused on the subject of how to realize in the first place. for instance:
in one of my freams, i was in a corridor that looked like the corridors in the movie “aliens”. i was with two cartoon characters, i think they were the lion king or something and i was naked with my…uh…parts being covered by a big green object. i still didn’t realize. how did i miss that?
EDIT: also, why i am here, what was i like to mentally manipulate objects? that is one of my main goals. (you should use it to create godly destruction, another objective of yours  )

Before i offer advice, i must first explain about the Old Hag. When you go to sleep, your brain paralizes your body so that you don’t act out your dream. IF you wake up while your body is still paralized, you will not be able to move properly. You will be able to open your eyes, however you will probably hallucinate. If you do see the old hag, then there are two things you can do :

  • close your eyes, telling yourself this is a dream
  • look at the old hag and laugh at him/her.

If you choose to laugh, which is the best option , the old hag will either turn into something funny and make you happy, or it will die. Anyway there is already a thread about the old hag and sleep paralysis right here

I must say, it was rather hilarious. I made my pinky and index fingers on my right hand swell up to the size of footballs during my second LD. I could actually feel the change too, it was sooo funny!

All I did to do it was picture it in my head while in the dream, and it happened. Just like magic!

ah, thank you for that, i did think of making the old hag do an irish jig in a rainbow-coloured dress. but wouldn’t it be scary when you first see her? i mean, the TV reconstruction i saw was of a tall, blue mask aswell. seeing the real life thing staring at you (take cofee as an example, in the link you provided.) must in the least frighten you. but you are right, i could close my eyes and open them, seeing jesus or a big figure.
and that sounds awesome neko! hehe, in an open world you should summon the old hag to come from nowhere, mentally “manipulate” her into the sky or something, hehe.
also, what would be the best tactic for tonight, when i go to sleep, to keep my mind awake? a WILD?

Well, the old hag is scarier if you know nothing about it. Of course by creating this thread, you should be fine because you know that it is only a figment of your imagination.

Old hag isn’t always a scary old lady like the one you’re describing. I remember reading one account where old hag ended up being a dancing teddy bear.

As for the best thing to do to keep your mind awake, no one can tell you that. You’ll simply have to find out by yourself. Some people find that counting is easier. Others find visualizing to be the best way, and others find that concentrating on HI is effective. I personally find that focusing on noises is the best technique (i.e. tinnitus). You’ll just have to experiment and find out.

It’s unlucky that you’ve seen a TV show depicting the Old Hag because now that is probably what you are going to see, you may get scared when you first see it and it probably will be like the one you saw on TV because inside you will be thinking that, but like someone said further up just laugh, just tell yourself it’s fake and admire your mind for producing something so real

One IMPORTANT thing to add. The Old Had is a sleep trouble. If you don’t have this sleep trouble, you won’t see the Old Hag. Moreover, it’s still rare amongst people who are subject to the sleep paralysis trouble that their hallucinations are strong enough that they see the old hag or anything else.

Really? I’ve seen it twice. Does that mean, i have sleep problems ?

O? In which conditions? Did you relate it somewhere?

funny thing, ive woken up w/ the old hag experience before except its never the old hag, I always think its my older brother sitting on me and pinning me down so i cant breathe. And by the way SP isnt that bad maybe scary fro a few seconds and then its over and you realize how wierd it is its actually pretty interesting.

Old hag can be very scary, the program depicted it well it actually sounded more scary than the “old hag” experiences I’ve had.

But they are all the same for me, I can’t move (usually face down, probably because that’s how I sleep) and I feel a pressence in the room, then I feel something climb onto the foot of the bed, it mounts me and I feel pinned down. I try to turn, but find it extremely difficult to move.
Then it usually fades and I wake up.

The last time I had it I was able to break the paralysis and swing my arm out as if hitting out at it, I was having “old hag” regularly at the time and after that nothing since.

I’ve always found the experience interesting after the fact, but during it the only thing I can think about is my need to move.

I’ve never experienced it in any direct relation to practicing lucid dreaming however.

Returning dream is great way to get lucid =] You should just remember that when you feel something climb onto the foot, just get lucid, pick shotgun and make old hag have few holes in head

To me, i never heard about “old hag”. Maybe that’s good for me.

I’ve had variations of the “old hag” dream a looong time ago… I remember I used to dream that I was lying in bed, unable to move, and this big cartoon-character looking thing walks into room and starts advancing on me. All I can remember was that it had mickey mouse like hands (white gloves) and long spaghetti-like blue arms, he looked like he was made of styrofoam or something -.-

Anyways… I better be LDing when I run into that old hag, because i’m going to dream myself up an AK47

Sure it was a dream?
