Does anybody here know what a theremin is?
If you don’t, then you’re missing out!
The theremin is the only instrument (that I know of) that can be played without being touched. It was used in old goofy scifi movies in the 50’s and whatnot, as well as classical music. It was also used in the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” and Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer”, so it’s a very versatile instrument. Look it up on YouTube and Google, it’s a very intriguing instrument and I’m going to get one soon! Let me know what you all think, because I want to get the word out about how great these things are.
I’ve heard about it … and heard music played with it … IMHO the sound has something of a singing saw ^^
Theremin is the direct ancestor to Wii
I think it sounds more like a stringed instrument such as a violin, at times. Different settings and effects can be applied to theremins.
I can’t wait till Monday, my aunt might be bringing one over and then I can start playing.
lol, i was learning to play it when i was in year 7-8 to get out of a few classes a week, didnt get to good but its a fun instrument, there are a few vids on youtube. the bloke plays a few Oot songs and also, a few old songs, hes really good
interesting, never heard of it before, when i have the sound working on my laptop again…hopefully this week, I will look it up
Essentially , most theremin consist of a black box with an anntenne with has about the same lenght as the box.
The instrument is played by waving your hands in between the Antenne and the main instrument corpus , which is used to influence the pitch and the “color” of the sounds produced…
Ah! now i know what you are talking about we have one here in my city, although it is very very large, at the science centre I remember when i was young with my twin we used to play it. Cheers for the info
They were invented in 1920, back then they were a lot bigger. There’s a discontinued theremin model that has more of a wood finish, it doesn’t look quite like the standard “black box” model.
Most “real” theremins have two antenna, at least the ones that I’ve seen. The left-hand loop antenna controls volume, the right-hand verticle one controls pitch. I think there are some really crappy ones that aren’t really used for actual music, more like toys. But there are some “pitch-only” theremins where you just get a constant tone with no volume control.
EDIT: I’m borrowing my uncle’s theremin now. My aunt dropped it off today and it’s so fun to play!
Wow. I’ve never heard of this before in my life! That’s an instrument I’d love to try playing it looks fun! I don’t think I much like the way it sounds, though. The tone sounds irritating, like an ever so slightly out of tune synth.
Some people can play it extremely well in tune. I’m somehow getting good at it but I still can’t hold a note perfectly or play individual notes, I just use a “gliding” sound of articulation. I’ll get used to it.
Oh, I think I’ve seen one of those! At least it was similar… you would wave your hand between two antenna to produce the sound. Except it was hooked up to a laptop so you could change the timbre and volume. Eh, I’m probably thinking of the wrong thing, but I saw one of those in an electronics store and my little toddler cousin loved it.

This is an incredible video of what someone did with a theremin, enjoy!
I LOVE that video, I watch it all the time. xD My favorite theremin video on YouTube, probably…and that guy is absolutely amazing with a theremin.
The way it sounds like a voice is eerie.
Does anyone know how much one of these things costs?
Or where to buy one
