Time

Did anyone catch the series on the Science channel about Time. It was pretty enteresting. One question they asked that realy made me think was… “How long is the present?” There was allso a man who only had about ten secounds of memory, he was basicaly living in the “Now”. It was like he was allways just waking up from a comma. Like on the movie “50 first dates” Time has allways enterested me. Its such a huge part of our lives, but anyway what is your thoughts about how long the present is before it comes the past?

For the present to become the past time has to go by of course. I think that the present is one second because a second after that is the future and before that was the past. Yes I know the present is short. I might be wrong of course, don’t rely on my response too much.

Your probley right. I was disscusing this with my friend, and he said there is no present, because as soon as you recognize it as being the present it has allready became the past. Like this moment… “Now” is in the past, and never exsisted as the present. If that makes sence.

Time is a measurement made by man for practical reasons, i.e., making dates and schedules and whatnot, but does time really exist? Where is this “time”?

What time is it?
NOW.
In five minutes it will be now, in a day it will be now, in a year it will be now. Those times do not already exist, we know not what will happen, there is no “future”. There is no past, those events are not “NOW” anymore, and they are subject to the faulty human memory, so who knows what really happened in the past?

Makes you wonder a lot. That statement is true, but why wouldn’t there be a past and future? There had to be something before and after NOW.

You could say: In three seconds it will be The Now… 3 … 2 … 1 … PRESENT!!!
Of course there is no reason for doing this. ?

And what is this faulty human memory you speak of?
I don’t understand what your trying to say…

As I understand it, in order to talk of the past, future, or present, one must establish a reference point in the context of their comparison. If your argument is that the ‘present’ doesn’t exist since it has passed while you were identifying it, that just means that you are measuring the present in units that are too small.

On the other hand, if you are like DayLight, everything is in the NOW, then you are using units of measurement that are too large to be practical. If you consider this moment in time, up to 1000 years from that point, the present, then any time between those two points is your present.

I believe the reason why we refer to a point in time as the ‘past’ or ‘future’ is because we have already established the period we are referring to, and there is no need to be more precise with your description. If I am sitting in social studies and we are discussing the American civil war, then I know that we are talking about the past. These events have already transpired and are unaffected by our current actions. The future is a point in time when what we had previously believed to be the present, has become the past. And the present is the reference point from which you determine the unit of time that will define the past and future. :look:

Regardless of what you call it, time is a physical force that definitely exists in the universe, it is a constant. Classifying time is relevant to how you perceive it, plain and simple.

Time is our ally, so it seems, in matters of growth.

:eh: I’m trying to say that the human memory is faulty. How do you know you remember things exactly the way they happened? You don’t.

I’m pretty sure i can remember things exactly the way they happend… certain things… :meh:
