Hah well I wouldnt say I’m vegetarian, or any “ism” or any category (at least I try not to be)… if you must know I hadnt been eating meat for about 18 months until I went home for Christmas, and in the general atmosphere eating meat seemed like the natural thing to do, so I did. This past two weeks I’ve stopped eating meat again, and am finding it as easy and natural as before, but I’m far from militant about it.
But yeah, dream, I am a bit confused about your metaphysical position here. When I mean “materialist” I do mean metaphysical materialism, as in the brain is consciousness or at the least is totally responsible for it. I mean I used to have this view, and I think that is why I get so worked up about it being wrong. If I used to be Muslim I’m sure I would be arguing anti-Islam instead.
I wouldnt say wish for the past to be undone, but wish for a future where we can take what we do have now and use it for better ends. I mean say what you like about materialistic science, it has ended up producing the internet and without that we wouldnt even be in communication.
And yes Ego, I read just the other day of a guy who returned to his body after an NDE and was already in the morgue. Stone-cold dead. Also came back with some interesting predictions for 2012…
Excellent, mate. I actually have just started to eat wild caught seafood after being on a very strict vegetarian diet for more than 8 years.
I believe that the brain is not soley responsible for consciousness, but that its physicality does play some significant role in its existence. However, by far the majority of evidence that we have now suggests that the brain is soley responsible for consciousness; evidence is slowly, slowly growing to suggest that this isn’t so, but NDEs are just about the weakest form of this evidence.
Right. I think either the development of technology or the total abandonment of polluting(on many levels) technology is the only way we can fix what I believe to be the wrongs of humankind. I find the latter impossible and probably devastating, in the short term. I guess what I really wish for is a way to correct my perceived wrongs of our race.
Of course it plays a role! It wouldn’t here if it didn’t play a 100% vital role. As I said, I think its required to facilicate this physical experience. It’s meant to convince us this is real, and it does a good job in doing so.
I disagree on both accounts. Our evidence only ASSUMES the Brain is in control. But we can’t test Sprit/Soul, it’s of course, the only way it can be. But NDE’s are the greatest threat to the standard model of Consciousness than anything else because they are 11000% completely unexplainabled by Science. Science can somewhat explain the Tunnell of light and barely clings on to explain to the peaceful senstation. But beyond that, the deceased relatives, OBE, extra worlds, future predictions, and most importantly, the information recieved, has no explanation at this point except the Spiritual explanations.
ASSUMES???- suggests, Dreamfortehwinz said suggests!!.. Science never knows anything with 100% absolute certainty. You look at the evidence and make the obvious conclusions. And we can only go by what is observed. It wouldn’t be scientific method otherwise and everyone would come and crap all over your results.
And what is the standard model of consciousness from a science perspective… I have never seen one? As far as my reading goes… science tends to stare away from tackling that issue… and only now are they beginning to look at it objectively.
I think you misinterpreted what I said. Standard Model of Consciousness = Brain is source of Consciousness. We cannot test (yet) the existance of Spirit. Science should not attempt to either, it’s out of the realm of what Science deals with and I fully and entirely support that. But that does not mean Science is the only way to look at it…But I’m not arguing, I know you guys aren’t insinuating this either.
But just curious…How can you look at something objectively when we haven’t found an objective perspective to begin with?
Nah, its ok, I didn’t clarify. You’re right, Science itself does not attempt to draw any conclusions. It’s the followers that misconstrue the ideas (much like Religion is misconstrued from it’s followers as well).
shrug
Either way, it seems were all in general agreement. Cheers.
