That is a brilliant question. Mainly … is our brain a single core or multiple core? lol
If it can do multiple things at one, even at a quantum level then yes I think that character could very well be doing math simply using the same math engine YOU use, or they may very as well be using memory or even expectation.
If our brain is sort of a multiple core processor then it could even get much more complex than we may think.
I agree with Dagto. And as for the book, it depends on the title; if the book is old and torn, it may be a book of early memories. It all varies on what you perceive from it. And yes, you can ask DCs to read things for you.
