Sounds like it is All I’ve heard is that scientists recently got permission from the Dalai Lama to investigate a few Tibetan tumo monks who practice the psychic heat yoga (they can sit outside in the middle of the Himalayas for days, while keeping their body temperature stable by channeling immense energies through their body only with the aid of their mind).
I actually saw a documentary on that same thing, these monks are able to go up into the mountains, where the temperature would kill you in like 15 minutes, i think, and sit there for hours unaffected using the power of their mind.
I found out about the energy thing in a documentary too, the can scan there bodies and actually see the energy that they can shift into specific areas for specific uses. Thats how they can have the strength that they do, they did some full on things, one monk was even able to throw a pin through a pane of glass.
This information exists everywhere. It’s the dis-belief that keeps people from realizing it’s true potential.
So sad. Just because it doesn’t fit the world we watch on TV or experience everyday, we automatically have the knee-jerk skeptic reaction that it’s obviously false until proven correct first-hand or something (not saying you do this…just ranting). I think skepticism is a great thing to have, EVERYTHING should be taken with a rather large grain of salt. But does that mean it’s crazy?
What about when someone said, “You know…I think the Earth isn’t flat at all…it’s round!”
CRAZY!
Does anybody recall what happened when Galileo said “You know…I think the Earth is NOT the Center of the Universe…in fact…I don’t think it even has a Center…”
CRAZY!
I often refer to a lyric that while used in jest, makes a valid point…
“Be a believer, beleive in everything, you’ll be right half the time.” - Jets To Brazil
near-death.com is a very good site some of the information on it is extremely fascinating. I think this may sort of be linked to the chakra thing but i think it’s strange how information poeple get when they die can be linked to information in the scientific community. I seriously think we are getting to the point when science is going to realise that there is something more to it than just, well you know whatever.
When I’m back home (that will be… tomorrow evening) I’ll search for some information about psychic heat yoga and the scientific experiment (got some articles about it… somewhere ).
Well, I thought it happened recently, but the experiment apparently was conducted in Dharamsala, India, in the 80’s. The experiment was led by Herbert Benson, M.D. They indeed had to ask for permission by the Dalai Lama (which they got). In front of the scientists, a few monks then went into deep trance while visualizing typical tumo imagery: a golden lotus flower inside the navel, shining like the sun and bathing in the mystical sound ram. This fires a small flame inside their body which then can be brought upto the mystical nerve channel behind the seven chakras. From this central channel, the fire spreads through smaller energy veins until finally their whole body is filled with fire and heat. The monks hold on to that image until their identity vanishes so they become a little flame inside an immensely vast sea of fire. Once the monks reach this stage, they play it all backwards again until the fire is reduced again to a little flame; the flame vanishes and with it all the imagery; then the meditation is over.
Now, during the experiment, the monks were closely monitored through a whole bunch of scientific instruments: there were instruments coupled onto their back, navel, forehead, nipples, fingers of the left hand, toes of the left foot, left under arm and left thigh who measured the temperature. Additionally, the heartbeat was being measured by a little instrument on their thumbs, and also there was an instrument rectally inserted to measure the temperature inside their body. Despite all these strange-looking instruments, the monks didn’t have any problem of getting into the tumo trance. Most results were gathered from the finger and toes electrodes: one monk was able to raise his finger temperature by 7.2°C (44.96°F) and his toe temperature by 5.9°C (42.62°F); another one raised his finger temperature by 8.3°C (46.94°F). This last one was also the only one who showed a decrease in heartbeat (from 90bpm till 60bpm). While these results may seem impressive, they’re nothing when compared to the talents of real Himalayan tumo monks. For instance, in another experiment (done by the same scientists, but now conducted in the remote region of Sikkim, between Nepal and Bhutan, in 1988) a few student-monks had to sit naked along the shores of a frozen lake, meditating all night long. A helper then wrapped cotton rags, who were first soaked in ice water, around the students. The purpose of this famous tumo practice was to dry the rags using the tumo meditation. Once a rag was dry, it was replaced by a new, wet one. Some monks could dry up to 40 rags during one night! During another experiment, scientists got permission to investigate the meditation of The Venerable Bokar Rinpoche: he managed to reduce the rate of his metabolism with 64%, the lowest level ever measured inside a human body.
Tumo meditation is absolutely necessary for those yogi who meditate in remote caves in the Himalaya; and genuine practitioners should be able never to wear any warming clothes or never warm their body by fire. This inner heat production is only a side effect for the true goal of tumo yoga: to fire the spiritual flame of enlightening within themselves.
One of the more famous practitioners was Alexandra David-Neel, the extraordinary woman who was the first Westerner to enter the forbidden city, Lhasa (in 1924). She used it to survive the harsh cold of the Himalayas.
There are very nice books online ( free) by Sri Ram Sharma Acharya combininng the spiritualy with mordern science. I know he has written a lot about Chakras and Kundalini but most of his writings are in Hindi… Some books like The Extrasensory power of mind, sleep dreams and spirtual reflections, life beyond physical death etc. have been translated in English.
They can be downloaded ( free)from:
For combining science and spiritual practise, one should also check out www.solarhealing.com.
HRM claims to live on water and sunlight and teaches his method of sungazing to humanity ( no charge) for mental, physical and spiritual benifits…
A lot of research is being done on him and a lot of yahoo groups/ web forums with a lot of testimonials… Some scientists/doctors are studying the HRM phenomena…
Far out man… that Hira Ratan Manek dude looks interesting, he claims :
lol that is so cool, i like walking on bare foot but only on natural surfaces. Also when the sun is shining i like to do some chi-kung while charging with sun-warmth it really makes me feel refreshed but i keep my eyes closed when doing that.
Does anyone have a link to somewhere that backs up his claim of “the eye having more uses than sight”?
This sungazing thing sounds impossible, but if it really is true then there’s no way I could attempt it… living in a place that has months on end of no Sun at times.
Yes I met him…
Anyone who is willing to pay for his travel and staying needs…
( He does not eat so not to worry about food. Aslo, for staying he does not mind sleeping on sleeping bag and about travelling he does not mind travelling by Bus if someone can not afford… He only accepts volantary donations for his foundation…)
He spends over six months in USA travelling from one city to another…
There are many fourms on sungazing and he replies to questions on some of them regularly.
If you are intersted, I can put links to some of them here…
