What's your totem?

Someone started the question “What’s your totem?” on Facebook, and within seconds the count of answers had gone up a hundredfold. It was amazing to watch the post count. It made me realize how many LDers and would be LDers there were.
So if any of you have a totem you use, what is it?
Mine is an hourglass (thinking sand falls slower in the dream)

Well I hope I understand your post correctly…

I wanted to know what my animal totem was… so I waited until I became lucid in a dream… I was stood in a living room with a roaring fire in the corner and I asked the dream out loud ‘what is my main animal totem?’ The room started filling up with cats - so I guess I got my answer

I have a special coin that has writing on it!

Mine is a die

An empty lighter. If the flame’s there at all when I flick it, I’m dreaming or someone re-filled the fuel as a prank. If the fire isn’t blue, I’m probably in someone else’s dream.

And yeah, I wish the Inception people called RC’s something other than a totem.

Actually, what I meant is do you have an object in this world that when you see it when you are dreaming, that something is off/different?
For instance, I have a tiny hourglass, that takes exactly one second, (I say the word “twenty-one”) for the sand to pour in the bottom half. So at some point I hope to check the hourglass in my dream (out of habit) and hope that the sand will fall slower, so that after I have said “twenty-one” the sand will still be pouring. If that happens I will know I’m dreaming.

Mine is a ring that has 3 words written on it. When I’m in a dream the writing is different.

Ah! In that case I guess that my hands or my tattoos are the closest thing I have - they always look different in dreams

Lost my lighter a long time ago! It never worked to get me lucid, anyway.

Here’s my new one:

I turn it in my fingers, and if all the lights turn off and on when I do that, then I’m dreaming. It’s like the light switch reality check.

I have a tattoo on my arm that reads ‘aequitas’ and if it reads something else, I would know that I’m in a dream. I also check my batman ring frequently and try to switch it to superman ring and I guess if I succeed I’ll be in a dream.

Mine is a red ball. When I can make it appear in my hand it means that I’m dreaming.

I carried around a foreign currency coin for a while as a token, but after weeks of experimenting with it, it never once appeared in my dreams. At least, the dreams I remmbered. It’s and interesting thing though, an object that can create lucidity in an instant!

I assuming Totems and Reality Checks serve the same purpose…

I ask myself if I’m dreaming and try my best to push my right index finger through the palm of my left hand. I do this randomly throughout the day and any time something seems odd in any way.

I’ve started counting the digits on my left hand as well.

Totems with writing are brilliant! Such an easy and sure reality check.

This is the first I’ve heard of that idea. I’ve never really considered totems, as I’ve felt that RCs do the same thing and do it better, but now I’ll have to rethink this. The “holding my nose shut while trying to breathe”-RC has been trustworthy, yet is awkward to do at times. Something small with writing, like a watch, could be rather nifty.
