Alarms and abrupt wake ups

Im just begining my “training” on how to have lucid dreams. And im wonderin if being woken by an alarm or somethin will make me not remember my dreams. can someone please help me out

Hi there,

I have noticed that alarms waking me up or anything that wakes me up abruptly can sometimes limit my chance of remembering dreams…but it depends what I have to do that day.

But its abit dependant. If my alarm goes off and I am already well into my sleep… and I dont have to get up and rush for school/work or something, I will be able to lie in bed and think about my dreams, and usually remember some.

If my alarm goes off, especially when I havnt had much sleep, if I have to get up immediately, and rush to work, I will always completely forget my dreams.

Hope that helps!

In general I seem to have better recall if I use and alarm. Because otherwise I might not wake up that often and then I will also usually forget to write down my dream. But atleast I get more chances to try WILD and MILD when I use and alarm

I think I had a start of a lucid dream, but I’m not sure. it was about 6:00 in the morning, and I had hit my snooze alarm a third time and went back to sleep. My dream was that i was taking my license test, and my instructor said, “I have to fail you because you stopped 3 times” I protested, saying, “But my alarm clock-Wait…” and then I realized i was sleeping. A fraction of a second later, my alarm clock went off. Can i count this as a lucid dream?

Yeah, you can.

My Alarm clock/mom KILLS my recall, I tend to only remember my lucid dreams, making it very hard to keep a dream journal, and keep intrest.

And for the people who are interested in my talking, Yeah, another random LD broguth back my intrest and me to here.

when last night?

Kinda weird but i had the same feeling…

Anyway yeah Alarms usually mess up my recall, because it draws all of my focus away from remembering my dreams, i think it would be better if my clock said something like you just woke up now do reality check and remember your dreams.

That would be kinda weird though…

Radio alarms are even worse, though some people will say it’s cool when the news influences your dreams just before waking up. But it ruins my attention and concentration after waking up.

I have a regular sleep schedule now, always get up at 8am (today is an exception  ) and now I generally wake up a few minutes before my alarm goes off.

I only have one day a week (Sunday, today) where I am able to get up without an alarm clock and it figures that for some reason I had zero recall today! (And I slept for about ten hours so I should’ve had some nice, long REM stages!) I’ve always had vivid dreams and good recall in my life, but since I’ve been reading about LD all week and keeping a DJ (which isn’t filled w/ dreams but mostly me writing about my frustration about my lack of dream recall, I hope that’s not hindering my progress), I actually am having fewer remembered dreams and fewer vivid dreams.

I read another topic in this forum that said if you think having LD 's is easy, then it will be, maybe this is the trick with dream recall too, maybe I need to do a lot more RC 's and tell myself that the alarm clock will not make me forget my dreams, that it will help me…it’s all in our own heads how much we can do with this thing, right? So I should be the one who says when and how I dream, damn it! :content:

I guess I’ll go read more of EWLD and hope I have better luck tonight, but tomorrow is Monday, AKA alarm day, so who knows if my own power of suggestion will work. Usually other thoughts penetrate my brain before I can focus in the mornings…the very first day I started keeping my DJ I remembered immediately to record my dreams, alarm or no alarm, so maybe I’m just getting too frustrated now and need to stop trying so hard.

If i’m woken up abrubtly or have to get up straight away I’ll forget some of my dreams.

That reminds me of a dream I had while a play was on the radio in RL. My mind made up visuals to go with the sound. It was weird waking up, still hearing what I thought had been a dream.

for me if something wakes me up in stages of NREM sleep I remember things that I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER even have the faintest knowledge of otherwise, such a pretty hypnagogic music.

Well it depends for me.
If I haven’t used my alarm in ages and it just suddenly wakes me up I remember things alot better because I was ripped out of my dream which leaves it fresh in my mind. Although I’m usually irritated cause 90% of the time its a good dream.

The effect dies over time tho cause I get used to the idea that I’m going to wake up to the alarm.

As for me if the alarm wakes me up in NREM I will not remember a dream, but if it wakes me up in REM i will almost always remember a dream
