I have a very lousy sleep schedule, to say the least. As a college student (We Are Penn State!) I get up at a different time everyday for classes or work, which results in sleeping less or more on some nights. My dream recall has suffered immensely, I can only remember a dream every few nights. Tonight I’ve been having some insomnia and thought that maybe it would help me sleep better tomorrow night if I don’t sleep at all tonight, and can begin a more dreamer-friendly sleep schedule. I haven’t had any lucid dreams lately, and I think my sleep schedule has a lot to do with it. I know I should get at least some sleep every night, but could it be better to miss out one night to gain more sleep other nights?
My personal (but not in any way professional) opinion is that it could hurt your dream recall even more.
My advice is that you wake up every day as early as your earliest class of the week.
If you are a night-owl like me, then I can understand that an all-nighter can sound like a pleasant way to repair your sleep cycles, but the problem with all-nighters is that you will feel a huge urge to go to bed sometime during the afternoon the next day.
Most likely you will start thinking “oh heck I’ll just take a quick nap, only for thirty… min-utessszzzz…” at 2 o’clock or something and then you wake up in the middle of the night.
In my opinion it’s more important to have stable and constant sleep schedule rather then when your sleep schedule begins and ends.
If you sleep more through the day, afternoons, then try to keep it, so your body can adjust to that. If you change it all the time then it’s hard to adjust and of course your DR will be bad!
Hmm. I try to have a constant sleep/wake time, but I have insomnia and often can’t fall asleep until more than an hour of laying in bed. I might try to get up at the same time everyday, but days I work start hours before the days I have classes, and I’d rather not get up at 6 everyday. I guess getting up between 6-8 everyday and sleeping around 11 would be a good “compromise.”
Find the best timing. It will help you. If you are insomniac I can’t tell much from my own personal experience but it seems that SDR technique helps a lot with insomnia. I practice it myself on daily basis. Try it out and see if it helps you too.
Good luck!
Okay thanks I’ll look into that. I’ve tried Zzzquil, and it seems to help on most nights, but I always wake up feeling exhausted, which isn’t good when I have to drive to school everyday. I’ve also tried various meditations that may or may not help as far as I know.
Well the “sleeping pills” usually mess with the DR so if possible you should cut on this and try with other things like you mentioned meditation and other “alternative” techniques…
I don’t use Zzzquil or other sleep aids often, and as for “alternatives”, inebriation seems to completely kill my dream recall, though I may sleep better. If that’s what you meant by “alternative”.
by alternative I meant like meditation and such techniques although from my experience alcohol helped me at least I like to think it that way at least in 10 cases…
My experience with alcohol is that when I do drink usually I can’t sleep because mostly there is vodka and redbull so you get the idea but when I do finally fall asleep that is with much more awareness then usually!
