Convincing DC's that they're dreaming

Hi. I just had a long lucid dream that I spent convincing dream characters that they’re dreaming. Usually when I do something like this I just get blank stares or incoherent replies - or they get angry at me. I changed my approach this time though, and it seemed to work well…

Basically, I went to each person individually (one on one) and asked him/her to count his/her fingers for me. They all obliged - and when they came up with something strange I’d ask them something like “But aren’t you only supposed to have 5 fingers? You must be dreaming…” At that point, they’re expressions would change and they’re thinking seemed to clear up a good deal (able to speak coherently - including acknowledging the fact that we were dreaming).

I did this for about 20-25 dream characters, and it seemed to work with all of 'em.

Also, as an aside, dream characters often have messed up hands… One had long, greenish monster fingers, and another had stumps where the upper segments of his fingers had been cut off (I had to tell him to count the stumps). They also had difficulty counting, so sometimes I’d have to ask them to count their fingers a couple of times…

Anyway, I know other folks out there enjoy chatting with DC’s, so this might be a fun thing to try…

Usually I can convince DC’s that they’re dreaming pretty easilly. I usually have pretty intelligent ones… but in a recent LD, they were all high and drugged up, it was impossible.

Maybe I’ll use this technique next time.

I tried that before. I told a friend that we were dreaming, and she wanted to know how I knew. I told her to plug her nose and breathe. We did that together, but she seemed very confused and thought that we could do that IRL anyway. I told her that didn’t make sense, and she kinda shrugged it off…

I only had one lucid dream that involved trying to convince a dream character that they were dreaming, the case being my sister. Like many dream characters that I’ve heared of, she refused to believe. I had even demostrated to her that this must have been a dream by showing her that I could stick my finger through my other hand. She wasn’t even phased. Her response was, “That has happened to me before.”

Perhaps that finger counting technique that you’ve mentioned will show them.

On the other hand, I recall once asking a DC, “Do you know that you’re just a dream character?” They seemed sad, and simply nodded.

Huh?

They aren’t dreaming. You are dreaming. Like above said “Do you know that you’re just a dream character?” makes more sense to me.

Agree with Robin.

I get mixed results:

  1. They argue with me and try to convince me that we’re both awake or both dream characters.
  2. They grin and smile, like they’re sharing a secret, happy that I’ve found out.
  3. They get excited and nervously join me in trying to fly and other great dream activities.
  4. They shrug it off as unimportant.

I usually get the biggest laughs from the first one, where they try to come up with convincing reasons why we’re either both dream characters or we’re both awake.

Then again, there’s the entire realm of shared dreaming…

I dont see much point in talking with DC. If its just a lucid dream, they are your own thoughts creations, not real entities. Well, if you go one step further, then maybe…

True…but these are more than just thoughts/creations. They are the product of your subconscious…and most people have little or no connection with their subconscious. If you learn to understand and decipher what your subconscious is telling you ( E.g…By talking to DC’s) then you’re sure going to go a long way.

Honestly, i havent heard of any experienced dreamer who would say it is of any use talking with them. They say its just not going to work. DC’s may tell you something, but a sensible dialog is out of the question, as i understand it. If you confront them with some facts from reality - they will just spout gibberish at you.
I’d say its better to just wish to know something, and the dream will put your wish to some use, probably.

Not all DC’s lack the capacity to hold an intelligent conversation. Some of mine speak in riddles, revealing some interesting and enlightening ideas.

I haven’t personally heard any dreamer saying it’s pointless to talk to them.

I hope I don’t come off as rude, though… :bored:

You have now!

I agree with MatrixManNe0, I love talking to my DC’s. Sure, sometimes they can be absurd, but even that’s fun. They can definately hold intelligent conversations though. As it was already stated, they provide an unparalleled access to your SC.

It’s not at all pointless to talk to DC’s. I have a problem with being extremely shy and introverted. Lately in my LD’s I’ve been trying to convince DC’s that they’re dreaming so we can do something fun together. They’re usually a lot more intelligent after they know.
Besides, all this interaction with DC’s IS helping me overcome my fear of people in RL. I felt it at school today.

I find that it’s what you expect (as everything is when you’re dreaming!)

If you expect a DC to fight you when you try and tell him he’s fake, he will. If you expect him to hold the secrets of life, he often will. Then, the subconscious mind is sometimes a hazy mystery, and the dream slips out of your conscious control. I personally like that. Adds an element of surprise to the dream :content:

Oh well. I, myself, would rather talk to some clearly intelligent and actually real being, than my SC. After all, you’re already stuck with it for life, right ?

So, you’re walking down a dream-street and a DC comes up to you and starts talking. Turn your nose up and walk away?

“Sorry, Sir, your intelligence is not on par, I refuse to speak to you.”

Hehehe, I like that. I might say that to a DC just to hear its response.

Pretty much so.

I think that was just an error that I made in my post, just due to the fact that this was the title of the topic. I do agree, though, and I never really tried to convince them that they were the ones dreaming; I simply tried to convince my sister that this was a dream. It’s just a misunderstanding; perhaps, just because I’m a native English speaker, I didn’t bother to pick out the meaning of the topic title, and overlooked that. :ack:

As for the opinion on not talking to them at all, then why even bother with lucid dreaming in the first place? Look at it this way: you say that they aren’t real, so they don’t matter. Well, the whole dream isn’t real, including all of the dream scenes that you may see. So, using your logic, lucid dreams should be completely worthless in their entirety, right? They aren’t real!

The subconscious is capable of creating many fascinating dream characters, just like it has the ability to create fascinating landscapes and scenarios. I don’t talk to DCs a whole lot in my dreams anyway, but they still can be an important part of the dream.

There’s something depressing about trying to convince someone they don’t exsist; even if it’s true.
