Do you have control over when the dream ends?

Splitted from the BIG LD FAQ. It’s not a frequently asked question.

I have a couple of questions for you really experienced lucid dreamers:

I know each dream can only last that long, but when you go lucid do you actually have control over when the dream ends, or does the dream abruptly fade out as it would without lucidity?

And, in the later stages of sleep, when dreams are almost consecutive, do you still lose lucidity as you move from one dream to the other?

Well here again we can use the standard answer:
It all depends.
Some dreams can control the length of an LD ( or an ND ). This is usaly by waking up to stop the dream, but can also be “willing” the dream to be longer, or concentrating on making the dream longer. The use of “lucid pills” or other “in dream techs” durring the dream can also incress dream length. For most of us though, the dream fades out, or ends abruply when someone or the alarm clock wakes us up.
As for your second question, I am not sure. From my experance, which is not “pro” level, lucidity does not go from dream to dream. From what I have read in DJ’s it does’t look like that is the case for most people. When you are lucid you can sometimes control the dream enough to change the dream, but I don’t think that it becomes a different dream then.
don

You have a greater degree of control when you are lucid but there are still limits, your not going to be able to keep your body in REM sleep for many hours so eventually the dream will have an end.

Yes you would still lose lucidity because there is a good solid 20-30 minute break between REM stages even at the end of the night. In addition you have to wake from a dream to remember it so your lucidity is also broken by the waking up.

what i find is that after being lucid in one dream that night, i have a much larger chance of becoming lucid or RCing later that night

In my situation, the best way to get out of waking up from a Lucid Dream is by spinning. It works pretty well, you should try it. So yes, in some ways you CAN control it… But not really.

And the second question is a good question. :open_mouth: I’m gonna say that it probably won’t make a big difference as you go through each stage of sleep. Though, maybe if you’re in a lighter stage of sleep if you get excited or whatever it would be easier to wake up but… My ideas aren’t very scientifically backed up.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I’m asking all these questions so I can find out just how long I can extend a dream. I’d like to make entire “movies” in them when I become good at lucid dreaming, like a self - contained entertainment programme while I sleep. Should be a blast with the added creativity of the dreaming state.

Oh, and sorry for posting in the wrong thread. For some reason I thought its name was a misnomer and that you could post any question in it.
Don’t worry. It’s not important. The BIG LD FAQ was for discussions about frequent questions/answers which could be added to the FAQ. Basilus West
