dream/real life memories.

moved from beyond to stuff forum :moogle:

Does anybody ever get confused between events which happened in a dream, and events which happened in real life? i sometimes do. if it’s any notable event, i can usually dismiss it quickly as it being from a dream. but sometimes if its one of those “i think i had a conversation with someone about some particular topic at some time” type of memories, i can never place it as real or from a dream.

the reason i bring this up is because i had a funny dream last night. in my dream i booked a room in a hotel with a friend, then that was that. later in the night i had a dream that the date had arrived to go to the hotel, but i couldn’t remember if i had actually booked the hotel, or only dreamed it! i tried to phone up my friend, but instead my phone malfunctioned and called my mum (phones never work for me in dreams) and she seemed rather concerned that i couldn’t tell between my memories. then i phoned up my friend, and she said that she wasn’t sure if we booked a hotel or not.

i thought this was a rather funny dream, to actually get confused with my real/dream memories inside my dream. really thinking so much about dreaming in my dream should have caused me to go lucid  but oh well.

This happens to me a lot with conversations, heh.

I think it’s because when we recall conversations in dreams, most of the time we just get the gist of it; it works similarly in waking life.

With really important facts, you recall specific details about what happened, when it happened, etc. With simple conversations like that, it’s not always so clear-cut. That’s my experience, anyway.

I get this a lot, I even had one last night. In my dream I remembered eating 15 dollars while I was in front of my computer. When I woke up, I was trying to remember if I actually did that or not. At first I thought I did late last night and I didn’t remember it, but after thinking about it I figured it was in my dream.

i sometimes get this too, but thankfully it never put me in difficult situations in RL. the last one was about me completing the term project (actually i didn’t even start working on it) and i felt really relieved until i realized it was in a dream. and i didn’t remember the dream, more like the thought was in my mind when i woke up.

Yes I think it happens to most people. Fortunately my dreams are usually easy to distinguish from reality - but when they’re not, it can be confusing.
