Dreams = headache

New here… just have a question. I cannot find any other “answer”.
I do not remember my dreams. EVER. Rarely, I will dream (at least to the point of remembering bits and pieces). Upon waking after I dream, I have a headache. From minimal to extreme. It varies.Went to bed at 10:30 last night.Woke up at 11:26 (phone rang) Head was hurting, and I remember a fragment of what I dreamt.
Went back to sleep. Woke at 6 am (again… a fragment of dream lingered) and my head was KILLING me. What gives? Any ideas or thoughts? No medical conditions so I don’t get it. It bothers me, thinking brain tumor or something lol. I don’t get a headache trying to rememember dreams, it’s just like an after effect.
Thanks you guys for ANY thoughts or suggestions!

I highly doubt this has anything to do with dreaming directly. It could be a side effect of waking up earlier than normal or something, but then I wouldn’t expect a headache unless you’ve been missing out on a lot of sleep anyway.

Or, and this is just bordering on silliness, it may be that your brain simply has to process too much if it also has to remember dreams? I don’t know, it just all sounds so strange. I have no idea what it could actually be. But it shouldn’t happen, that’s for sure, unless you do, in fact, have some sort of medical condition (that you might not be aware of?)

My sleeping pattern is the same so I don’t think the tiny interruption last night would cause a headache. If / when I wake up with a headache (not often) the first thing I think is “did I dream? do you remember even the tiniest thing resembling a dream?” The answer is always yes. I remember the few dreams I DO have only for a minute or two (unless it was something WAYYY bizarre-o).
I’ve thought of mentioning this to my dr but since it doesn’t happen OFTEN, I don’t want them to think I am a looney. I don’t know if they could do a brain scan based solely on the fact that I only get headaches when I dream. I wish they would!
Maybe it IS my brain trying to process? Personal life = me having to remember alot of stuff, things to do, take care of, etc. Can my brain get THAT overloaded by a dream?

I don’t know if your brain can get overloaded: I’m just 14, and I’m no doctor :tongue:
Is there a possibility that you may grind your teeth while you dream? And by doing that, you get a headache when you wake up. I know I grind my teeth alot while I dream (And in my waking time too, by the way), and my dentist told me that you sometimes get headache by doing that.
These are just my thoughts, so don’t take them so serious :wink:

Hmmmm… I never thought about teeth grinding. Good call! Although, I my jaw doesn’t ever hurt. I’ll check the symptoms of teeth grinding!

I agree with Svenshinhan you’re probably not getting enough sleep. My head always hurts when I dont get enough sleep

I figure if it is sleep related (or lack of) then I would get them often, or at least get them regularly. I sleep 6-7 hours a day, straight through. No waking up, no nothing. I lay down and am out in 3 miniutes.
Thats why it is SO bizarre to me, as well as a tad worrisome.
The ONLY headache comes hand in hand with a dream, or the rememberance of a fragment of the dream. It only happens every 2-3 months, not daily, weekly or even monthly. Maybe that is why it bothers me so and freaks me into brain tumor thoughts.
Maybe I’ll just give up and be thankful it’s not a regular occurance.

I think the two have absolutely nothing to do with each other. It actually reminds me of something called superstitious conditioning. This occurs in animals, but of course in humans too. Two events that happen at the same time by coincidence are linked to each other. So I think that you must have remembered a dream when you had a headache and unconsciously linked these two things together. Your unconscious mind probably tells you every time that you have a headache that you therefore must be able to remember a dream, and voila…

Also, there are many many causes for headaches, from stress, to sleeping on a bad mattress, tension in neck and back muscles, drinking too much coffee, etc…so a tumor is not something I would worry about. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a headache seriously, go to a doctor and try to find the cause.

Good luck :content:

What I’d suggest you do:
Try to get 8-9 hours of sleep a day for a while (say two weeks or so) and see if the headaches persist when you wake up from dreams.

6-7 hours is too little for the average person. I say average, because it depends on age and varies with every individual, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this might just be the cause. If you’re still ‘young’ (under 30 or so), you might just need an hour or two of sleep extra per night.

Also, it’s better for your health in general, not just for (lucid) dreaming. :slight_smile:

Y’know… I’ve had the same thing happen to me twice very recently where after a lucid or bizarre dream I wake up with the feeling of a hangover. For me personally, this cannot be attributed to a lack of sleep because I’m an amateur boxer and I have a very healthy routine.

It’s been so bizarre each time it’s happened that I searched on Google until I found this thread. I can’t find much else on it though…

I am a newbie that has just started a dream journal. I am getting a little more sleep than usual because I stay in bed hoping for a dream. I usually sleep from 10.30 - 5.30. Now getting 10.30-6.30 or even 7.00.

I am able to recall 3 or 4 dreams per night. I make a note.

Now, I have found that since starting this practice I also wake with a headache. Not a bad one, but enough to be annoying. I wondered if it is because:
(a) I am getting more sleep than usual;
(b) By staying in bed, semi-conscious and trying to have a dream that was somehow causing the headache.

Too soon for me to draw any conclusions and there is no way I am giving up my quest for LD.

It could be because too much sleep.
I sometimes get a headache when I get too much sleep, or more rarely when i sleep poorly.
Try to wake up in your usual time do a WBTB then go back to sleep, i think this could help you. Btw drink water during that WBTB because almost all of my headaches are because of dehydration and water always helps me.
