Emotional Residue

Dear Dreamers,

Several times I’ve had highly emotional dreams. After waking up, during daytime, I still had those same emotions only less strong.

For instance, I dreamt i was deeply in love with Paris Hilton (I couldn’t stand her before). After waking up and seeing pictures of her, I still felt a little ’ love’ . After another night’s sleep the felling dissipated and the hate returned.

Of course this is not about Hilton, but about emotional residu. Do any of you guys experience this too? And in what way?

Well I don’t have this with dreams so much but I have it with books. When I read a book, with a lot of emotion, I turn out to be very sad.

I believe that your brains first recognize the emotion and later decides who’s emotion it is. That makes us understand eachother

I had few such dreams when I was younger. I remember one where I dreamed about a girl I had had a crush on and that feeling carried over to the waking life and set mood for the whole following day.

Yeah, I’ve experienced similar things, some dreams that I can still remember from my childhood because they had such a strong impact on me.

But I don’t think even a dream could make me love Paris Hilton, she’s nasty!

It seems to make sense. After all, simply making a specific facial expression can eventually cause you to feel the emotion that correlates to the expression (see books by Paul Ekman for more details). In fact, in his book Emotions Revealed, Ekman has the readers fully understand the emotions by experiencing it. In order to have the readers experience the emotion, he instructs the readers to either recall a memory in which the certain emotion was felt, or move certain facial muscles and hold the pose until the emotion is felt.

Usually the feelings are still there in the morning. Wich is not strange. But your example was about a feeling toward a specific person. I suppose feeling may awaken within dreams, after all dream feelings are just as valid as waking feelings.
In you case, your negative emotion was replaced by a positive one. Sadly it did not stick around, love is always better than hate. Hate is bad for your health.

For me emotions that linger are general, like, happiness. A few times fear. And most commonly, horny.

i used to have that as well, it shows a good connection with your emotional side and dream recall imo, but you have to be careful with FM they can be very istrubing to your every day to day life, my advice would be to try and feel the diference between a real memory and a false memory/feeling, once you can do this, you should be able to deal with the ones that are upsetting a lot better and control your other feelings from the dream world too. best of luck

I´ve had something like that once. I dreamt I was smoking, it was nice. IRL, I had never smoked and never will. But later on that day I felt like having a cigarette!

Thanks for your replies.

Well, some of you seem to have remembered this in the past when you were still a child.

And another question arrises: Is this emotional attachment stored in the short-term memory? And could it be a signal that there is no difference between short-term dream memory and normal short-term memory?

If dream emotions can last during daytime, where are they stored? And why do they have such influence on us?

An emotion felt in a dream is no different than an emotion felt while awake. They come and go but you remember them. In fact, the stronger the emotion, the better you remember the experience.

It’s only natural that when you have an emotional experience and later is reminded of it to feel the same thing again, though not as intensely. Just think of some emotional experiences you’ve had. Especially something recent since the associations are fresh, not yet faded. For instance. Laughed hard at a joke recently? Think about it now and observe your reaction.

Emotions are not stored. They are reactions, experiences. States of mind.
