Failed OOBE(?)

During the last 4 days I’ve been wanting to have lucid dreams badly. So badly that I’ve been a little too tense during the night, and I wound up not having any at all. I did have lots of NDs but that’s not the point. Two nights ago I was trying to WILD into an LD, and I tried to grab on to the first picture I saw in the hypnagogic state, but nothing happened. A little later, whithout doing any conscious effort (hell I had even given up using WILD), I started to hear some sort of humming or very high pitched crackling. It took hold of my entire body and I was going: “Oh my God, I’m WILDing, I’m WILDing!” and that’s when it stopped and I opened my eyes. “Damn” I said to myself. Alright, nothing too strange so far. But last night, being a little more relaxed, I tried the MILD method. So as I was thinking “Now I’m going to fall asleep and wake up in an LD”, my thoughts suddenly shifted to something I read on the forum, namely the Sky Island experiment. I think I was still quite awake. And I was thinking, “So, interesting logo, isn’t it?..This Sky Island’s gotta be…”. And then my mind started going “Sky island this, Sky Island that…” (this Sky Island thing might be irrelevant to this case but anyway…), and I think I was starting to slip into the hypnagogic state, no longer conscious. And suddenly it happened- I felt as if something had hurled me to my bad from a hight of a few metres. I only felt the impact, which was pretty violent. My chest still aches from that, and I think the place where the pain originates is my solar plexus. The first thing I thought was “Did I just have an OOBE?”.
So actually what I’m trying to figure out is, could I have subconsciously tried to have an OOBE and it failed? And how do you explain the pain in my chest (which I can still feel). I really felt strange after that and I still do. As if something isn’t right with my system - I mean it’s starting to wear off now, but still… My goal isn’t really to have OOBEs, just to be able to occasionally have lucid dreams and remember them. So what exactly should I do if this thing happens again, or if I get the humming sensation again. I know the line between OOBE and WILD is quite thin. So, should I use WILD on a regular basis - I’m still a novice in lucid dreaming - should I just stick to MILD for the moment?

Hi moonbeam_surpher, welcome to the forum!

You seems to have some gifts in WILD’ing cause you can reach the hypnagogic state easily (moreover by many ways cause you are able to have HI, auditory HH and kinesthetic HH altogether  ). So it could be interesting for you to continue and learn WILD. Your first experiences may surprise you but I think it will go better when you’ll get more familiar with them.

In the same time, you can practice MILD. I think both can be practised together.

About the falling feeling, it’s a common experience while WILD’ing. It’s possibly because when you are on the verge of falling asleep, your brain closes its sensory inputs, hence you have the feeling to fall. I don’t know about the pain in the chest. I suppose it’s likely not to occur again. Perhaps experienced WILD’ers may answer you about this point better than I will. Anyhow, I don’t think that “something isn’t right with your system”. All this seems to me quite normal (if we can say that WILD sensations are “normal” :content: ). There are very strange feelings while WILD’ing. Now, if you don’t feel ready now to face those curious sensations, then you can just stick to MILD’ing.

Good luck on your further experiences!
