Had a LD (finally!) this morning, when I passed out after my alarm went off…I ended up in a semi-nightmare of sorts, only to suddenly realize that I was dreaming and defeat my enemies. Then (as I recall) the dream locale changed to a ruined city, and I “spun” in a uber cool way (it looked great).
I resurfaced in a “cocktail party” of sorts in what appeared to be the ruined city; the party ended up much different than I thought, and I enjoyed myself by making my family members there get out of my dream.
But then I made my fatal mistake, which was forgetting that my DC’s don’t have emotions, and (probably) losing some of my control; but I “awoke” only to check my digital clock, and see that it was “5:30”, 30 minutes until school. Amazingly, my digital clock was NOT exploding with bizarre numbers, but then again I expected it to be a concrete number and didn’t look twice. I ran down to my computer to write a post to the board, and ended up seeing a very bizarre and different calendar on my computer when I realized that I didn’t know what day it was (a sign that I was dreaming, which I missed).
I ended up waking up shortly after this (apparently it was “Saturday”). Wow, dreams move slowly; my dream seemed like it was 30 minutes in total (with about 2-3 of lucidity). In hindsight, it’s probably a good thing that I had an FA, as I would have ended up late to school. But LDing is getting easier for me; I just am realizing why my dreams lack such vividness; there’s a limited sense of touch, and no sense of taste/smell (that I can recall ever being in a dream). Everything seems and feels very distant from reality in the dream, and nothing like the “perfect simulation”; I guess it’s just a matter of involving myself more.
EDIT: this was my FIRST FA that I can recall. It’s pretty damn cool to have it happen…
Leave thoughts here and advice, PLEASE. I beeseech you, almighty gurus!
Firstly, congrats on your LD. Each little lucid experience is another step towards power beyond your wildest dreams (pun intended)
I’d like to discuss a few of the things that you considered to be unusual or perhaps didn’t fully understand. You’re right about the clock reality check - it had a valid number on it because that’s what you expected to see. I’ve said this a few times in the past, but a lot of people aren’t using the digital clock RC properly and hence aren’t becoming lucid at some prime oppertunities. When I first look at a clock, the number will almost always be legible. Then, I remember what that number is, and look away. Now, when I look back at the clock, I’m thinking about the number that I just saw on it (for purpose of comparison) and, predictably, that same number is again on the clock. My advice is to actually try to change the number while you’re looking at it, it works well for me.
You also mentioned that the dream (while lucid) wasn’t as vivid as you would have liked. This depends on how involved in the dream you actually are, and where your focus is. For example, the best way to increase your sense of touch is to carefully examine an object or surface, paying particular attention to how it feels. I often like to pick up one of the strange little objects that always seem to appear on everything around the house, then play around with it in my hands. Focusing on something like this will always increase its vividness. Alternatively, you might want to try some verbal commands. This is a pretty common technique, and involves giving commands to the dream world once you find yourself lucid. I formed a habit of chanting “Increase lucidity” the moment that I become lucid, and it always brings the clarity up a few notches.
False Awakenings seem to plague many people on this forum. Unfortunately, I only seem to get more than my fair share of actual awakenings (perhaps because I attempt to hold onto the dream violently when I sense it fading). Some people have suggested making it a habit to perform a realty check as soon as you wake up. This allows you to catch false awakenings, giving you another shot at lucidity.
It’s good to see someone recognizing their progress. Good luck, and keep us updated
