Getting Back Into the Habit?

Hey all. I was absent from this site for an extremely long time (almost exactly a year ago), as well as abstaining from lucid dreaming for an equally long time. Long story short, my younger brother was reading my dream journal. Embarrassment ensued. I only had two lucid dreams during the forced break. Now that I have a room of my own, I’m eager to get started once more.

I’ve spent a lot of time re-reading the methods and such for inducing lucid dreams, but I had one quick question. How long does it typically take for an ex-lucid-dreamer to start lucid dreaming again? I’d like to think I had a lucid dream last night (first night back on the job :content: ), but it was actually because somebody told me that I was dreaming (and later told me to stop doing things in my lucidity. This is a theme that has not disappeared over the time I stopped  ), and I’m still not sure if I was actually fully lucid.

Since restarting, its taken me just as long to get a medium LD as when I first started, (about 20 days).

One VERY IMPORTANT tip which I learned this the hard way. Don’t rush yourself. If you do, (since you’ve already had experience) you will start having LD’s before your dream recall is back, and they will be extremely low-level, discouraging, and generally un-fun.

So basically, work on LDing as if you have not before.

But the kind of bonus for restarting is that you are already experienced, so you will most likely move a little faster, and your Dream Control will be much better, as will duration, (since you won’t panic when you enter the lucid state).

Good luck to you!

Hey D, I’m in the same situation…been out of the scene for awhile, pursing other things, busy a work, etc…
I think I was a trying too hard before and I got a bit burned out.
I’m going back to the basics…and do it all with more patience and focus. In fact I just had an LD last night which has drastically renewed my confidence. We just gotta hang in there.

I completely agree with CosmonautFantome.
I went back to LD after a rather long stop (4 years). I increased my dream recall first (I didn’t remember my dreams at all), it took me a week, and after about 15 days, I had my 1st new LD.

Im only just back after a year. Seems to be a regular cycle with me. i go at it full bore for a long time then wane of for a period of upto 10 months then come back (over that 10 months i have spontanious LDs as well, but rarely). Been activly trying for the last three nights and still no success, on the uphand however my dream recall is back to its best i think as i can again remember my dreams in there entirety.
What i like about having been into LDing for a long time is the extensive knowledge you gain from the past, what i dislike about coming back to LDing is the fact that there is so little new information published on the net. It seems im reading the same stuff over and over. It used to be my passion scowring the net for new info but now it seems all i get is variations of the same stuff. Ah well i geuss ill keep learning from my own experiences.
Good luck!

Thanks much everybody. I’m trying to do what CosmonautFantome said and start from the basics. My dream-recall was shot to pieces, but it’s coming back easily. I’m also making it a point to immerse myself in lucid material, and doing reality checks (it surprises me how it used to be a habit, but I now have to think about them to actually do them).

One more question before I let this thread take its rightful place with all the dead reintroduction threads. Has anybody else ever felt like their subconscious was acting against them? The reason I ask is that in every lucid dream I’ve ever had except for one, including the semi-LD I had a week ago, DCs would TELL me to stop flying/shapeshifting/etc, and I’d even overhear conversations about the “weirdo” doing all this stuff. In one dream there was a posse armed to the teeth who asked me where the “weirdo” was  Good thing they didn’t recognize me…

I’ve noticed that my subconsious tends to reflect my own thoughts about myself.
Like just the other night I had a dream that I was trying to go to sleep on a couch in a large living room. Three young ladies entered the room in their nighties and cuddled on the couch with me. I felt very guilty and told them I was married and that they should sleep on the floor.
They continued to be playful so I got up and went outside to get some fresh air. I looked up at the moon (which was actually influenced by some recorded suggestions that I had playing) and because an unreal looking sky is one of my dreamsigns I became lucid.
I immediatly lost all thoughts of guilt and headed back to what I HOPED would be an awesome lucid dream… but no…the room was dark and empty. No matter how hard I tried I couldn’t recreate the situation.
This is not the first time something like this has happened and I have reasoned that at the exact same time I ‘wake up’ in my dream, that my subconsious ‘wakes up’ to the fact that I don’t deserve this level of indulgment.

Did you ask them why they tell you to stop ? Do they have good reasons ? Was it an order or an advice ? If you haven’t asked them, I think it would be a good idea…

I remember asking them in one of the last LDs I had before I had to stop. Exact quotes, because I still remember the BIZARRE response I got:

Me: Why is it that everybody in my dreams tells me to stop enjoying my lucidity?
DC: Because you need to know your place.

I have no idea what to make of that…

Perhaps somewhere deep in your subconcious is the idea that LD’s are not for you anymore. So while you want to have LD, there is another hidden part of you who tells you: “know your place and get used of it!” But you don’t need to obey to your doubts, and fears

Of course my interpretation can be wrong.

Well, my DCs better get used to me having lucid dreams because I could always do nasty things to them in my lucid state if they don’t get used to ME having lucid dreams

Try this question for a change:
How can i get you(the DC) to aid me in my quest for lucidity?

I’m sure you will get much better answers

DC said:
“Because you need to know your place.”

Well, IMO it’s not a valid answer. It looks too much like a sort of parental injunction. So I agree with Cyrus. You probably have something to settle with you sub-c and your DC’s.
Next time you meet a DC, try to have an good explanation with it about this subject !
Good luck !

ive been sidetracked myself, my DJ just STOPS at 2-9-05. I think it was during a project or somthing. This is the third time for me. the last time i came back i was given good advice. I hope it can help you

-Remember that lucid dreaming is only as hard as you make it

-maintain high motivation! Dont kinda be motivated and kinda not, because what happens when you mix matterwith antimatter. you get NOTHING! maintain high motivation, going to these forums on a regular basis and reading Laberges book helped me before

The most important one though that I learned, was believe it is easy. LaBerge goes over the “mental blocks” that people set up. You can say its easy, but you really need to mean it for your subconscious to believe its easy also. once you have your subc reliezeing LDing is easy, its gravy baby

Off-topic from the original purpose of this thread, but generally all my DC’s are friendly and helpful. If I ask anything of them, they most all do.

For instance, last time I had a LD, (only a couple of days ago), I asked a DC how I could learn how to phase through solid matter. He said "You want to go through that gas station, right? “Try it out. While we were talking I put you in a hypnotic state. You will have no trouble. Good luck!”

And he was 100% correct. Awesome.

Anyway, this thread helped. I had my first new lucid dream two nights ago. It only lasted five seconds because I only remembered to start spinning after everything went black, and then I had a false awakening (these have become VERY common for some reason lately). I didn’t run into any DCs, but I’ll make a point to do so next time. Thanks everybody!
