Help (with sleep paralysis)

Sometimes within only minutes of when I fall asleep I become lucid. I know I am dreaming but I am paralyzed. I can open my eyes slightly and see the real world. This gets combined with my dream world. I do not enjoy this experience seeing as how every time this happens I try my hardest to wake up but can not. Also when this happens I think I have use of my arms and when I try to touch myself it feels as if I am numb. I am not sure whether this part is real or part of the dream. It scares me and I do not wish for it to continue. Can anyone help me?

Hi, and welcome to LD4all! I moved your question in here so it can be found more easily.

What you describe sounds like a type of sleep paralysis. This occurs in half sleep, probably when waking up from REM sleep when our muscles are paralysed. This paralysis is a safety measure, without it we would act out our dreams and maybe get hurt. It isn’t uncommon to hallucinate in this state. As a general rule, anything that doesn’t normally belong in your room when you are in sleep paralysis is a hallucination, and some WILDers actively try to reach this state because it is relatively easy to continue into a lucid dream from it.

Opening the eyes or blinking hard while in a lucid dream is a very effective way to wake up. The next time you could try to remain calm, tell yourself that you are half asleep and concentrate on the dream part of the image to fall fully asleep into a lucid dream. Some of my brightest, most vivid lucid dreams have come from sleep paralysis.

Sweet dreams, and good luck!

I typed sleep paralysis into wikipedia and that is exactly what I am experiencing. Thank you so much. Now that I know it isn’t dangerous I might play around with it a little bit and see what happens.

SP is not dangerous and about a half year ago we had an interesting discussion about SP located here. But that topic also asks how many times youve experienced SP. And its interesting to see how other dreamers describe SP :cool_raz:

Welcome to LD4All!

When you know you can’t move, don’t. Just imagine yourself teleporting to your dream world.

:welcome:

Have fun with it.

Your fears and your attempt to wake up are the reasons for it to become an unpleasant experience.

When it happens, try exploring this state and just relaxing, you should be completely inside a dream soon enough

Hope this helps
