I catagorize my dreams into 3. 1. The “real” dreams. These are ones projected from the outside worlds trying to tell me something, like, I dream it’s cold and threw off my blanket or dreaming of finding a bathroom and I wake up to pee.
2. TV show dreams. These are LDs but not terribly interseting. I usually choose not to interact with them and they usually don’t evoke much in the way of emotional responses. 3. Interactive LDs. These are often in color and evoke a strong emotional response. I often feel I need to interact with these and usually do. Something needs doing, something needs to be found, someone needs to be helped.
How do you catagorize your dreams? I’ve been a LDer since my 20’s, now 60.
Personally, I categorize my dreams as being either a “Processing” dream, a “Problem-Solving Dream,” or an “Adventure” dream.
My concept of a “Processing” dream might overlap with your “Real” dream category. It’s a dream in which my current concerns are at the forefront, where my mind is processing emotional experiences and memories from the day.
A “Problem-Solving” dream is a level up from “Processing.” They’re usually more symbolic and less literal. A “Processing” dream might involve being late for work, but a “Problem-Solving” dream is centered on a deep psychological issue. For instance, two nights ago I dreamed about my ex-wife’s family. I’m still quite attached to them, even though I never see them anymore. The dream was my attempt to deal with these feelings, I’m quite sure. “Problem-Solving” dreams can have negative outcomes, positive outcomes, and neutral outcomes. I’ve had quite a few of the ex-wife family dreams and they’ve all been the same: I long to re-connect with them and feel sad and guilty and they largely ignore me.
An “Adventure” dream, for me, is a level up from “Problem-Solving.” A lot of my “Adventure” dreams are lucid, but not all of them are. These dreams are typically positive and involve exotic, astral-plane locales or involve mythological themes and stakes. To me, in these dreams I’m creating new possibilities within myself. Some of them are healing dreams. Many involve close friends or family members.
I’m interested in what you mean by “TV show” dreams. Could you expand?
I have four categories that I use in my head.
The first is my realistic dreams. I wake up and go to class. I visit my boyfriend or talk to my family. Something that would happen in ordinary life.
Then I have semi-realistic dreams. Usually they are something I worrying about. They could possibly happen, but usually the worst outcome comes out. For the most part, these are stretches. There is a 10% chance these could happen, while my realistic dreams are 99% likely.
Then I have my unrealistic dreams. These dream are usually pretty horrific or scary, and feel profound. Often I’m a DO, and they are almost like a film. I don’t really know how to explain it, but usually they highly effect my day in real life.
And finally, the wonderful lucid dream. I find it difficult to LD, so these are a treat.

Dreamosis: Those are lucid dreams that are so intertaining in and of themselves that it’s more fun to just watch them and enjoy…much like a good TV show. My bed buddy has told me that sometimes when I’m dreaming, I’ve burst out laughing or call out like I’m encouraging a character or other vocalizations when I’m dreaming. TV show dreams are just fun…lucid but with no need to change the outcome. I just kick back and watch!
