How many of you guys/gals experience this?

i figured this is the best place to post this, sry if im wrong.

anyway, when ur dreaming does anyone have the feeling of ur jaw being held tightly shut, as if its wired or something?

generally, to me this is just a little annoying. sometimes it can feel as if its quite painful! another forum i visit once had a topic on dreaming and 2 or 3 ppl claimed this as happening.

i would like to know, is it that common? what could it mean? i would chalk it up to grinding my teeth or something and its coming through in my dream, but i know thats not it coz i dont do that. i have nice teeth

Id say its something that your doc should have a look at.Looks like some stress problem maybe? If your muscles keep being tense during sleep then it would be something about physicaly-mental problem.
just the guess but its usually good to inform specialists about those:)
good luck

I wonder if this is similar to what I noticed a while ago. It came to my attention that often while lucid I can actually feel that my eyes are closed, despite being able to see. I quickly worked out that this was most likely due to my eyes actually being closed, and I was simply feeling that in the dream. It doesn’t happen so much in high-level LDs, usually only when I’m close to wakefulness.

Anyway, I’m not sure why it would feel tightly closed, but it might just be the result of the dream incorporating the fact that it’s closed in RL.

I would guess you might be grinding your teeth IRL… try getting a mouthguard and wearing it at night… your dentist would be able to take an impression of your teeth and make a plastic tray that fits over them… the tray wears out after a while but it’s more comfortable than a regular mouthguard… I’m not sure what the cost is, but the procedure is simple… my stepdad has a dental office and I can make them for myself… hey if you wanted to travel to Idaho, USA I might be able to make you one :content:

in some of my first lucid dreams i had this and i was very very tense. try and chill before sleep. NO TV. lol comming from a 17 year old. just listen to music that helped me heaps. and yer grinding teath that is a killer

I used to have actual grinding problems before so I had to wear mouthguard during nighttime… somehow it went away on its own.

By the way yeah when you’re in SP or dreaming sometimes it can happen that you get the sensation of grinding your teeth. I often find it very fake when I experiment with it. I believe that it’s one of those things that your subconscious is trying to block you from being able to fall asleep consciously. I don’t know how to explain that.

Hope I’m making senses here?

By the way if you suspect you have actual grinding problems, best to go and see the doctor about that or otherwise the damage can be irreversible.

It deffinately sounds like stress. When you get stressed your jaw can tighten during sleep or even grind. Does sound like this is what is happening.

Sometimes however i don’t do that but instead dream that it is happening or even that my teeth fall out. (usually i just get lots of tornadoes though)

I would suggest a mouth guard to make sure that you aren’t grinding and feeling it.

Yep, sounds like a grinding problem. One of my friends recently got a mouthguard that helps her stop grinding her teeth and she must wear it in stressfull situations (final exams, extream swim practices exc) and when she goes to bed. I’d recomend checking it out with your doctor, it may be the way your jaw is lined up (if that’s so, see an orthodontist) or just a grinding problem mixed with stress!
Good luck!

Hm…Yet another problem averted by Lucid Dreaming!

okay then this has haappend to me many times and in some dreams i cant speak because of it but when you relax,or when i relaxed for a while and just went to sleep it went away

ok, thanks for all replies. i havent been able to talk in my dreams either. im pretty sure its not a grinding prob coz i said, i got no probs with grinding. my girlfriend does grind her teeth, however, and the noise she makes wakes me up. im a pretty light sleeper and thats one of the main reasons i dont snore either  the noise wakes me up
