How to keep anticipation down

The other night i was on the verge of becoming lucid. I knew i was dreaming and was trying to figure out where i was exactly. I am a very novice LD’er.

Anyways, the anticipation of becoming lucid was too great and my heart rate went up due to the excitment, which basically woke me up. i am kinda worried that if i try to become lucid it wont work unless it happens kinda outta of the blue in the middle of the night.

-Does anyone experience this?
-Have you overcome this?

  • Yes. Most people do.
  • Yes. You get over it in time. Just keep on trying.

I have only ever LD’s a couple times and it is exactly what happened on both of them.

Your just so happy you finally did it that you mess it up…

You are thinking too much. It takes time and practice but this will get better.

Everybody does.

After a few LD’s, it naturally disappears. Nothing to do, just practise LD.

I used to think that I would never get over the shock of lucid dreaming- I know how much it sucks that you become lucid and lose it.
Believe us, you will get better at this and you will suceed in having lucid dreams where you don’t wake up from shock! You just need more practice
(Random: An even MORE annoying way to lose your LD which happened to me once- I was slowly getting less lucid, and decided I was going to lay on the couch and fall asleep because ‘I’d hate to be tired tomorrow’ RAH!)

Thanks for the confidence. I figured it would just take ‘time’. Well, i’ve got enough of it.

If i count the total LD’s ive had including the close calls… it’s . So guess im still just really a rookie.

Last night i had 3 almost lucid dreams. I can’t believe i accatully came that close 3 times. I was on the ‘edge’ and then the excitment just stole that the lucid dream from me.
But i noticed that compared to the 1st time i had this experience to the most recent one i had last night; the anticipation of having a lucid dream has gone down and i think soon that i might be able to keep my cool.

Next time you become lucid try and remember to calm yourself down before you do anything else. Getting excited will wake you up so try and remind yourself before going to bed that you will stay calm when you become lucid.

Don’t worry about this too much though because you are making great progress so keep practicing.

Next time you find yourself in a lucid dream:

  1. Rub your hands together hard, really feel the friction.
  2. Don’t worry about flying or anything like that. Take some time just exploring your environment. Look at things close up and in detail. Trying to see wide open spaces can cause lucidity to fade unless you have some experience, so pick up objects and examine them close to your face. Decide that there will be a mirror close by and when you find it really study your reflection. All these things can prolong your lucidity.
The thing with lucid dreaming when you are new to it is that you mind needs time to come to terms with it - it’s a new thing to your brain, so don’t try to create huge wild lucids straight away.(that will overload your subconscious and wake you up) Get used to the idea of being lucid in small ways first. Stay in your environment and explore it. This will build your confidence and you can then move on to greater things.

It’s just because it’s a new feeling. Soon it will become ‘the norm.’ The key is persistance. You got anticipation the first times you rode a bike/drove right?

i understand, small steps. Thats good advice.

When i tried looking at my hands, they looked to be transparent, About 50%. So i could see them and see through them at the same time. I kept trying to rub em and i felt some friction. But i fell for some reason, I fell sideways if that makes any sense. and after that i woke up.

But i can really feel my confidence going up and my skill level slowly starting to increase.
