I’ve read so many people saying something like “I tried to WILD for x min but then gave up and went to sleep normally”. They say this because they can’t WILD/fall asleep, but as soon as they “give up and go to sleep normally” they fall asleep quickly. The thing to think about is what is the difference? What are you doing differently when you “go to sleep normally”? Because if you are able to fall asleep like that, you should get that and try to put awareness into that kind of falling asleep to get a WILD. If you’re trying to WILD and aren’t getting there it’s because you’re trying to fall asleep abnormally, and that’s why it isn’t working!
Exactly! People seem to think that if they fall asleep abnormally, somehow a dream will appear in front of them. I know from expreiance that it doesn’t work that way.
Iv’e only tried a couple of days in a row now of WILDing, and have tried the counting technique, I start to feel my counting getting really terrible and then I fall asleep without knowing it and wake back up remembering the ND i had. I need to try and hold onto that thread of conciousness some how, and counting doesn’t help lol. What other techniques are there? and I’ve also never had HI. Well not that I remember ofcourse. it’s early days!
It’s very unlikely that anyone can WILD reliably without having understood and internalised the ideas that OP has written about. The funny thing is, these ideas are so simple, and yet people keep overanalysing and thinking there’s more to it than just ‘fall asleep, stay aware’.
Exactly, I have seen people saying that a lot. It’s an indicator that they have completely misunderstood the process.
think of it like you want to fall alseep with a lifeline in the back of your mind to waking life. try to be aware of falling asleep and “close” it very slowly if that makes any sense.
It is not correct, Sliph. Thinking about WL often brings thoughts of events that spring emotions in us, if slightly, like fear, anger, frustration, also excitement, reactiveness, and that brings the body to being tense, and the mind wandering too much in its own memories means losing consciousness of what’s happening in the present. So either way, keeping awake or falling asleep, that way a successful WILD is unlikely to happen.
Instead, the simple procedure to follow is knowing what you’re going towards (very easy since you just have to observe yourself falling asleep and waking up for a day or two, or recognize how dreams feel), and accept it, become a part of it, become fully conscious of the transition in the mind state and integrating it in the current way of thought. That occasionally includes HI, but it can start way before they appear. THe “stay aware” part means that something is happening, and you just have to let it happen, without clinging to memories or happenings of sort. It’s all about watching how your mind prepares for sleep.
Summing it up, you do have a different mindstate when you dream; if you want to reach a dream consciously, you have to reach that mindstate consciously when you fall asleep.
Thank you im new to LD and ive been trying for a couple days and your clerification is most helpfull. Tosxychor ur very helpfull as well, hopefully with this comunities wealth of experience i can have my first WILD soon
Thank you, Lena and Toxy, now I actually know what I’m trying to do, instead of what is usually described as simply lying on your back till you either can’t move, or see things; I actually know what I’m looking for, what to observe, and how to do so.
Oh my gosh, THANK YOU. I’ve been trying to have a WILD with other wierd techniques before this. After reading this, it changed my whole view of WILD. Last night I had my first one!!!
Great! Congrats!
Update: So far, it’s been two for two. Now I can finally experience, and improve, my dreams to the fullest extent. My sincerest thanks.
I was useless at WILDing until I read a post very similar to this one a while ago.
I dunno if I’m allowed to link it (its on Dreamview) but meh I’ll post it anyway just because it’s a decent read for anyone trying to WILD.

Yay for no more insomnia by WILDing! Woot!
With so many WILD-related techniques and gimmicks around, it’s easy to lose sight of what you’re actually trying to accomplish, as it gets buried under all of the methodology. It’s great to have threads like this that expose the basics and help bring everyone back on track!
I don’t think I fully understand. I lay in bed every night and I try to wild, its to the point where when I’m going asleep I start the counting without thinking about it, I’m just used to counting now I do it automatically. Everytime I try to wild (Every night basically) I get to swirling colors and sounds. I also notice my counting gets messed up. (Like I will be on 43 for a good minute before I realize it, or my words will be different, like instead of 12 I’m dreaming, I notice I was saying 12 ice cream instead.) Is that bad? Am I doing something wrong. Also I get very strong urges to move my hands and feet when I get to swirling colors.
That’s a good thing, because it means that you are getting close to a dream. It’s called HI. However, when you are trying to WILD, your goal is not to get HI, it is to fall asleep and stay lucid at the same time.
No you’re not doing anything wrong. When your counting gets messed up, it means that you are close to a dream, and your subconscious is trying to take over. Once you have gotten to this stage, counting will become pretty useless, because your mind will just wander off. When you fall asleep normally, you usually daydream before you sleep. To fall asleep in a WILD, it works the same way. Trying to resists the daydreams will get you no where.
So, you ask, what do I do now? Well, if you can’t resist the daydreams, you have to go with them… but not entirely. Let your mind wander, but be aware of what you’re thinking about. When you daydream, always try to incorporate LDing in your daydream. This will help keep you aware until you fall asleep.

I never thought as them as day dreams, just as distractions, next time I’ll embrace them instead of pushing them aside. Thanks
(must hurry before my time and money expire on this computer lol- 2min!)
truue. i dont attempt it often, maybe twice in all the time ive been interested in LD.
but since i knew what op is saying it came actually quite quickly ( ok ok another dollar )
i just imagined things in my mind, simple things, one was a bow tie and i changed it in all colours.
as i passed into deep levels, it seemed for each i had an involentery (wooah my spelling- screw it) inhale of air… it was instant relaxation. and ofcoarse more and more my thoughs about moving my body became less and less, (the point where you think “if i move this is in jepordy”) then i felt a lift forward, almost into a sorta dream state. three blots of HI came into sight, it came at me like that room in the matrix movie, one large one in front and two smaller on the sides… but the excitement of suddenly getting that far even though ive rarely tried to WILD before, mixed with inexperience, took me some levels behind with a beating heart and sweaty hands lol. i hope i can pass that tonight… just gotta stay level headed and ground myself.
i got to a personal best without WBTB… id love to be lucid every night through this technique… is that possible… i mean i dont see why not. also ill just retry if i fail lol so simpy WOW.
A few quick questions:
How is your throat affected if you don’t swallow for a long time?
This is the hardest part about not swallowing for me, because knowing that my throat is becoming drier and drier feels a bit disgusting and uncomfortable.
Has anyone been able to WILD in a public place?
I tried napping at my local library the other day and I did fall asleep, so theoretically it should be possible to WILD at such places as well, right?
How is your night sleep affected if you WILD several times a day?
Doesn’t this mean that you will sleep much less during the nights?
First of all I have to say that this is only topic/guide where I saw WILD described in that way. I struggled for almost a year because I didn’t know that but I eventually figure it out!
I had the same problem, I was lying in my bad for some time I felt SP and I got to the point where I just became more awake then I was before going to sleep. So after some nights when I got to that crucial point I said to myself: "what would happened if I just let myself to fall asleep now?! " And I did just that. And I was in LD!
Very simple and very easy to achieve!

You may find on forum most common and most logical answer to that: don’t struggle with swallowing, don’t try not to swallow, just swallow but don’t thing about it like: oh I most swallow, I must, I must! Because that will be greater distraction then actual swallowing. After some time of practice I’ve noticed that I swallow a few times and then I stop swallowing, but sometimes I do but not consciously but more like a muscle twitch, almost like the brain is controlling that…

I’ve never tried that, but I guess if you are able to sleep in public and in noise[but in library shouldn’t be any noise, right ] then you can WILD if you find a good time for that!
-
I only WILD after minimum of 3 hours of sleep… I tried with naps but no luck, I guess I have to much night sleep even to be able to nap, because whenever I tried napping I almost never fall asleep!
Sounds impossible, but is absolutely possible. It’s hard to describe the subtle effort involved until you actually do it, because it’s so unlike anything one does or accomplishes in RL. The cool thing is that it seems the brain is wired for, regardless how impossible it sounds…so really all you have to do is intend to fall asleep while maintaining a thread of awareness. It’s kind of like the Cheap Trick song…“Hold on loosely…but don’t let go”. You just gently, progressively let go…like slowly dissolving into a stream, while at the same time holding onto a modicum of cohesion. LOL…don’t sweat it…it will happen if you gently persist
