Yesterday I discovered this site and I was astonished! That night I tried to LD but I failed, and instead triggered a terrifying SP experience. Now I am deafly afraid of trying to have a LD, thinking I may encounter another SP or nightmare. PLEEZ someone give me some advice so I can conquer my fears, and become a Lucid Dreamer.
hope,
First of all, welcome! Your in good hands, most people on these boards are welcoming and very intelligent, and best of all willing to help newbies like me and you. SP is very common in people, and you shouldn’t be afraid when it happens. It doesn’t happen to me anymore, but when it did I would remind myself it would only happen for 10-15 seconds. You should condition yourself to think this when it happens, to stive off the fear of SP so you can try to LD again.
Now on to the LD part. Like my sig says, I use MILD accompanied with frequent RT during the day. I am averaging about 1-2 a night, and I’m working on prolonging them right now.
I suggest researching SP, just that can make it a lot less scary. Know that whatever happens you can’t be hurt by it and anything you might hear or feel is made up by your own brain. Don’t fight it either, it usually makes it worse. Just wait it out, or… SP is a perfect time to try WILD’ing. I realize you’re a beginner and it is sort of an advanced technique, but if you can put yourself into SP than you can probably WILD…
SP means that you were very close to having a Lucid Dream.
It is quite easy to enter a dream without losing conscious when you are allready in SP state.
You should learn not to be affraid, and then you might actually start enjoing SP. SP is a totally natural state, that we all experience during REM sleep.
The only difference is that you were conscious during this state.
These are quotes from the article found here:
lucidity.com/paralysis.txt
It’s a lengthy article with more in-depth explanations and advice. I would recommend reading it in full.
The best advice is to just relax, and remember it is natural and harmless.
I have also heard if you must try to break the SP … you can start with your eyes. Wiggle your eyes and move them around as much as possible. This can help “break the mold” of SP.
I hope you don’t worry that this is part of the experience of lucidity. It should be better once you believe that SP is harmless.
Good luck!
Yes SP can be a little scary. The first time I experienced it I was terrified. There were no forums back then and I was figuring out lucid dreaming on my own. But, I continued to practice fear and all. In a very short time the SP became a cool experience for me and I hope the same will be true for you as well. Just keep in mind that it can’t hurt you in any way. When it does happen it means you are close to the world of dreams. In fact you are right at it’s door. The thing that works fore me is don’t think about and let your self go deeper.
Good luck
wow I didn’t expect so many people to reply. Thanks for your advice.
Hmmm… I’m just curious… What happend in your SP experience that was so terrifying ?
Oh, and… Welcome on the forum !
It seemed like someone right by the door to the room was watching me. Though the thought of it now isnt all that terrifying somehow just the SP experience itself gave me the feeling of being terrified. Now I have learned that this is very common during SP.
Actually, feeling terrified isn’t very common. Of coarse, it is the first time for most people, but once you know what it is and have experinced it, you’re not afraid. What you had sounds more like Old Hag - which is quite rare. And not likely to repeat itself either.
That’s right. I’m sure that knowing this will make your fears disappear and that you will soon experience LD.
Anyhow, congrats ! Reaching SP state at first try is rather rare !
