If a tree falls in the middle of a forest....

 no one told me that it would make a sound !

yes i know stupid reply but i had to get it out… stupid…

well according to family guy they make noises. lol sorry i just say some retarded thing sorry

Has anyone ever tried to meditate on something like the clouds or an object instead of a riddle (Koan) or problem?

It depends on how you look at it. If you take look at it scienticly then yes it will make a sound. I think that it will make a nosie but not a sound, sound is what you hear.

I took a class related to music of the worlds people, and though it wasn’t the main focus of the class, I did learn that sound is simply vibrations that come in contact with miniscule sensors in our inner ear and those vibrations are interpreted as sound. Now, there is always sound of some type (everyone knows that) no matter where you are. However, we often don’t hear many of them because our ears only pick up vibrations that are on a certain wavelength (I don’t recall exactly what it is but you can look it up). Anything above or below it is “silent” to us. Hence, why other animals (dogs, bats, etc) are able to hear things differently than us and often with more ease and accuracy. Think of the dog whistle.

Since sound waves spread out until they gradually disipate, yes, the tree does make a sound. The sound waves are just on too low of a frequency (or no longer exist) for us to hear it.

Yah, that’s about as scientific as I get.

omg that is hilarious, I was just remembering that episode…genius:

Peter: HOLY CRAP! I’m communticating with nature! Uh, tree, if one of you falls and no one is around to hear you, do you make a noise?
Tree: Oh yeah, Scott fell over last week and hasn’t shut up about it since.
Scott the Tree: Oh yeah, go ahead and bitch, but you don’t see anyone trying to HELP ME!

Oh yeah, I sort of remember that, that episode rocked.

Well, if you think scientifically, the tree still makes a sound, it creaks and then thunders to the ground.

If taken “parodoxically”, It still makes a ‘sound’ because someone had to have been close enough to the tree to justify or witness the tree falling - and therefore be within hearing distance of the creaking of the tree.

I think this is a classic example of an ambiguous description.

Hey but if it works for you, I probably sound like a ‘sciency’ person.

meh just my two cents. :content:

O yes and Amethyst Star, the lowest audible is 20 hertz and the highest frequency we can hear is 20,000 Khertz

Only if there’s someone there to hear the creaking. Otherwise it just causes ripples and waves in the air waiting to be translated into sound, scientifically speaking.

I always liked this one to meditate upon:

“The world? Moonlit drops shaken from the crane’s bill.” - Dogen

Also the ones in my sig
