I’ve been lucid dreaming for a while now, and i recently decided to learn more about astral travel, but the more i read on the internet, the more confusing it gets.
Most of the sources that i have found say that flying dreams and dreams in full color can actually be astral travel. so are dreams astral travel? or are they a completely different topic? can lucid dreams be seen as astral projection? or is that also different? I always thought that dreams and astral projection were different things, but the more i read, the more it seems like people make their own opinion based on what they believe about the astral plane and whether dreams are created by your mind or are actually the astral body leaving the physical body. I guess what I’m asking is: what is the relationship between astral projection and dreaming? Are they the same or are they different? and if they are different, then how?
another thing i’m confused about is exactly WHEN can astral travel be accomplished? do you have to be asleep to astral travel? or can you do it consciously while you’re awake?
If anyone can help me to understand, i would much appreciate it. i’m not exactly sure what to think at this point.
i had the same confusion. i will put it this way.
astral projection is not proved scientifically. i mean to say eventhough many had expirience that they leaved physical body in form of some other body,it was not proved that there is an astral body and there is an astral plane. it might just be another lucid dream in which mind created the illusion of leaving a body.
but the fact is that we are not really bothered whether you explain the same phenomenon in scientific way or philosophical way, it is the expirience that actually counts.
there are many sites that considered lucid dreams as projections and vice verca. may be you can think that there are levels of dreaming in terms of vividness and the persons with high energy development expirience these higher forms of dreaming such as obes.
nevertheless, there seem to be some differences between WILD/OBEs and DILDs.for example,
in obes you move predominantly by will and by flying rather than by walking.
the effects of gravity and environment are more prononced in lucid dreaming.
i dont remember other differences, i will post them later
So, when people claim that they have had an OBE, do they believe that their astral body travels in the physical world? or do they consider it a world within their mind?
And also, are the techniques for astral travel similar to the WILD techniques?
YES. Thank you, Kalyan! You expressed this perfectly!
While I must admit I find it personally annoying when people say that OBE’s and dreams are one and the same (either to dismiss it, as “only dreaming” when excuse me but I’ve dreamed, I know what it’s like and this was not like that… or just so they can say “I go out of body / astral project every night! Sometimes 6 or 7 times a night! And several times a day while daydreaming!” which I feel cheapens my own efforts, because, excuse, I’ve daydreamed and know what it’s like and this was not like that!) I find astral projection a rather presumptuous term-- it comes with the belief system of astral planes and astral entities, which is just jumping to conclusions too far than the even the evidence can reach. Even the 25132 OBE experiment didn’t map the realms.
If it were just a mindscape, I might be disappointed but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Unfortunately I can’t seem to find the version that was published in the American Journal of Parapsychology on what looked like Dr. Tart’s official site. And we have to keep in mind that these measly six studies are qualitative-- if it were quantatative, if there were more Miss Z’s and 25132’s, the statistics would have to push for accepting OBE’s as a physical rather than psychological reality.
Even though I’ve had difficulties OBE’ing, myself, I wonder why Miss Z and 25132 was the only recorded dramatic success. Did Dr. Tart wander around giving loud fake coughs that sounded suspiciously like numbers or something?
Well, I’m terrible at WILD. I have never been able to do it, so will astral projection be difficult for me? or is there some other way?
I’m sorry for all the questions, but i’m fairly new to astral projection/OBE’s and whatnot, and i tried reading through the BIG topic about it, but it kind of jumps around…
There’s no way that I would recommend, except by deep meditation. If you can’t do that, or anything like that, I honestly can’t think of any other way (that doesn’t involve an ambulance and resuscitator.) This is the way I do it.
Here are my all-time favorite sources: magicstudy.myfistyourface.net/gr … earn4.html cantrap.net/technique/ap.html (The way I do it is much more difficult, and I don’t use emotion, but I the way he described changing your own sense of location was something I found key.) Robert Monroe recounts his first OBE on YouTube (“If [the vibrations are] gonna kill me, then let it kill me” is kind of the second key in my own technique.) Robert Peterson’s OBE site (I little crude-looking, but the information struck me as authentic as compared to my own experiences. There’s a LOT of bad information out there on this topic, you see.)
