Imprisoned in sleep - Dream theory.

Gosh I hope this theory isn’t already common knowledge… :shy:

Anyway, during lent, I had an experience while sleeping.
I was in a dream that I did not recognize at all, but had the sure feeling that I had already dreamed it.
Now, I know this has probably already happened to many other people several times, but I came up with a theory.
Maybe it is possible to remember all past dreams while asleep?

It is sorta like one of the past quests… “Re-enter a past dream”, I think it was.
But in my theory, I believe that you can access past dreams, even if you don’t entirely remember them.

I call this theory the “imprisoned in sleep” theory, because these dreams might only be accessible while asleep, hence the word “imprisoned”.

I had that on my mind for a long time and thought I should finally share it.
So what do you guys think?

Well, I’m not sure if one can actually remember all past dreams, but I think it’s possible.

I once had a similar dream to yours. I was sure that I had already had that dream before, except that it was different time of year in the dream.

Nice theory. But i think it might not be valid… What I think is that dreams are not made to be remembered, thats why we forget them so easily, because the brain doesn’t have any use for the info from the dreams. I do think that one can remember SOME of the past dreams that one might have had the past days, but if one were to remember something very old it has to be a repressed fragment of a memory that one is visiting again in the dream, but i guess thats what dreams are made of.

I have been inplaces while sleeping thinking that I have been there before, just last night during sleep I was at an amusment park and I was thinking about “I have been here” As soon as I woke up I realized that I dreamed about that place before but totally forgot about it, not sure when. For me is more about locations (that I never visited in RL) , and waking up with past memories of them that I never had.

I had a similar experiance last night. That is an interesting concept. I would so go back and revisit my favorite dreams! That way I can remember them to their full extent with y improved dream recall!

(P.S. When you said “Re-enter a past dream” it reminded me of the title of the prog metal band “Dream Theatre” lol)

It is totally possible to remember all pass dreams while dreaming.

You can even use your dream to help you pull up past info or even start up an old dream. Maybe even watch a past dream on say a T.V. or such.

actually it is just as easy to do when awake, the difference is the visuals and the sensations are not as vivid,

in a dream all that is happening is we are in a reality which we did not make, so it is persistent, and then, when we create things, there is no barrier to our imagination, so it seems more real, you can create a lucid dream right now by imagining that you are touching a light switch and flicking it,

I don’t think it’s possible to remember all dreams while dreaming (or awake), but it should be possible to remember the dreams you already remember, while in a dream. Recurring dreams happen, so the brain must store something while the dream is going on.

Very often when I’m thinking about a dream or trying to recall one of the past, unrelated dreams that I’d forgotten will pop into my head. The brain must store dreams in a walled off section of your memories. Touching one seems to set a chain reaction off with the others.

This might actually be possible. When we dream, we are in the theta state. Theta meditation facilitates learning and memory. Correct me if I’m wrong.

your theory did not prescribe any method to remember past dreams during the dream. you just said it is possible.

I didn’t claim that remembering all dreams while asleep was possible. It was more of “Hey, I wonder if I found something”, and I just put that thought out there for everyone to think about.

i think it’s possible, when your dreaming you can’t remember any real aspects of your waking life … when your awake you can’t remember any aspects of your dream life. when your awake you can function, eat, run, go to work, whatever it may be. most of us are so “un-trained” at using our minds while we sleep that this ability to remember is probably not called upon.

i know for myself, i have a specific “area” of space in which i dream i. if i’m at point A, i know that i was at point B in another dream. sometimes i go from A to B in the same dream. if i enter outside of that space, i know immediately that it is something new.

First, it could be a recurring dream . some only appear twice or thrice in a lifetime, it had occurred to me too: i dreamed three times of climbing a mountain and descending on the other snowy side, but i realized it only the 3rd time i’ve had that dream.
Second, we often experience FM during our dreams to keep some coherence, and some might tell you already had done that before, hence the feeling.

Nonetheless, I do believe dreams are stored in our memory somewhere, even if we can’t access most of them, as most of our memories are. I only wonder if all our dreams are forever remembered, or they fade with time (I’m leaning torwards the second option).
For a method how to, you can take a look at Writerscube’s DJ: in one of his DreamWorlds, he has created a Memory Chamber or something similar, where he can access most of (if not every) his past memories at will, and dreams are indeed past memories.
