I usually dream in 3rd, and I dont know if its normal or not. I’m basically the view of a cameraman or something. Sometimes its 1st person, but more 3rd. Which one is normal/more common?
and BTW, being lucid sounds awesome, itll give me something to look forward to every day. Mainly because I like to think how cool it would be to have super powers and whatnot, and I’m a superhero fan .
Well, I always dream in 1st (a very few times in 3rd-it’s cool) but there are many people like you, don’t worry, it’s totaly normal. Sometimes you might even dream that you are someone else! In my dreams I’ve been an eagle, a dolphin, an angel and a… (?!) boy (that IS a bit worrying )
I actually dream in 3rd very often, but it seems 1st person is more common than 3rd, it might be like right handed - left handed, right is more common but there’s still a fair few lefts.
Oh, right—this topic is about point of view in dreams. For the most part, my own are in first person point of view, although I’ve had some others in third, which I would have to count as relatively rare. Dreaming of either is normal; in fact, I don’t see how anything related to dreams could either be classified as normal or not.
I think that for me it’s like this: I dream in 1st person, but I remember them in 3rd. That means, while I’m dreaming, I experience things 1st person but upon remembering I can only recall the scene as if from a 3rd person point of view.
Obviously I can’t be 100% sure because I’m not conscious while dreaming normal dreams and only have the (3rd person) memory of them. But while dreamding lucid dreams I’m in first person. And additionaly, I remember real events from a 3rd person POV too.
If I dream in 3rd person, its normally for only a part or segment of a dream. When entering a new room or area the view will switch. I had this one dream where it switched 2 or three times, once I was riding a motorcycle, which I don’t do, and the 3rd person view was amazing, like someone said earlier: like a video game.
I have a real problem wuth this. Sometimes my visualisation goes wrong because I often “think” in 3rd person.
I’ve had a few LD’s and quite a few more borderline ones, that were quite vague (must work on DR). I could swear that in a lot of the vague ones, I was third person. I think that is why I didn’t go fully lucid.
I once had a really strange LD, that started off third person. I was in a driving postion, but there was no car around me (ND at this point).
I was making stupid, childish car noises as I zoomed up my estate and then I saw a van coming down the road. Suddenly I realised I was dreaming and it went first person. I walked into the van and there was a random girl sat in the back. I looked around the van while trying to think of something to say to her and she just started kind of mumbling in the background. I tried to get to her but I couldn’t walk forward. It was really strange!
I now think third person LD’s probably aren’t possible or are at least are not AS lucid.
Not possible? I think a fair few people have managed to have 3rd person LDs. I suppose it would be easier if it started in first person, then you deliberately switched to third person…
Coming to think of it, I actually have quite alot of 3rd person dreams. I’ve only ever had one dream that I remember of being someone else- I looked in the mirror and argh! That was freaky. Too bad I just accepted it and went off without turning lucid.
I have dreams in 1st and 3rd person. I’ve had LD’s in 1st and 3rd person. For me, 3rd person dreams are like watching a movie or reading a book. I only started having them after I got more interested in watching movies, reading books, and thinking of little plots for a handful or people.
I’ve had this weird epic dream where I was simultaneously in 1st and 3rd person at the same time. There were two kingdoms in the dream: light and dark, and I was the light kingdom princess and overhead spectator at the same time. Almost the entire dream was in a weird double-vision.
I’ve also had an LD where I started out in 3rd person and then I took the persona of a character I liked, but I didn’t start directing his movements. I saw from the perspective of something like a little angel sitting on his shoulder and I made sure he couldn’t die and I changed the situations so it’d be more interesting .
